Western New York Flash News Release
The Flash have had a month long break due to the FIFA Women's World Cup, and ironically will face the last team that they played before the world cup break, the Philadelphia Independence. This time around, it will be in a different setting as they travel to Chester, PA to face the Independence. The Flash has not played on the road since May 29th when they defeated Philadephia 2-1. The Flash have had a solid few weeks of training heading into this weekends match and look to start the second half of the season with a bang.
Last time ¬Â¦
Philadelphia came out on top, 1-0 on the Flash ¬â¢s home turf at Sahlen ¬â¢s Stadium on June 12th. The visitor ¬â¢s goal came in the 90thminute by Danesha Adams. This defeat was the first for the previously undefeated Flash who now has a 6-1-2 record.
Battle time ¬Â¦
Since the Flash last played, they have fallen to second place right behind Philadelphia, whom have two games in hand over the Flash. Philadelphia defeated Sky Blue 4-3 on Wednesday, July 6th to pull ahead to first place by one point, as Tasha Kai scored a hat trick for the Independence (6-2-3). Philadelphia leads the league with 21 points, and the Flash has 20 points. Kai also is the new league leading scorer, with seven goals, pulling ahead of Flash ¬â¢s Christine Sinclair, who has five.
World Cup players ¬Â¦
Canadian national team members Christine Sinclair and Candace Chapman as well as New Zealand ¬â¢s Ali Riley will be missing from Saturday ¬â¢s match as they will just be arriving home from the World Cup. Alex Morgan, Caroline Seger, Marta and Maurine will be fighting to stay in the World Cup on Sunday morning in Germany, so the Flash will rely on other key players to gain a win on Saturday.
Game time.....
Kickoff for the match is slated for 7 p.m. on Saturday July, 9th in Chester, PA at Widener University. The game can be followed on twitter via @wnyflash or at www.womensprosoccer.com on MatchTracker.
