July 8, 2011 - Women's Professional Soccer (WPS)
Atlanta Beat News Release
KENNESAW, GA (July 8, 2011) - The Atlanta Beat (1-8-3) of Women's Professional Soccer return to league play on Sunday, July 10 at 6:00 p.m. against the Boston Breakers (3-5-3) at Harvard Stadium for a third meeting this season. Sunday marks their first WPS match since the short break for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany.
When the Beat last played on Wednesday, June 22, they faced Sky Blue FC (NY/NJ) at Yurcak Field. The match resulted in a 1-0 Sky Blue result after Casey Nogueira scored directly off an in-swinging corner kick in the 26th minute. The Beat outshot Sky Blue 17 to 10, but were unable to convert for the tie.
The two teams first met in the Beat's home opener on Saturday, April 9 at KSU Soccer Stadium where the Breakers came away with a 4-1 victory. The Beat responded with another strong effort the second time around as teams battled to a scoreless tie. The Beat have outshot the Breakers in every match so far this season, leading 14-8 in the first match and 9-6 in the second.
With the 2011 Women's World Cup currently taking place in Germany, both teams are without some valuable players. The Beat is missing midfielder Carli Lloyd (USA) and defender Heather Mitts (USA). However, forward Kelly Parker (CAN) will be back for this match since Canada was recently eliminated after group play. The Breakers are missing Kelley O'Hara (USA), Amy LePeilbet (USA), Lauren Cheney (USA), Stephanie Cox (USA) and Rachel Buehler in addition to Kelly Smith (ENG), Alex Scott (ENG), and Aya Sameshima (JAP).
The Beat mutually dissolved contracts with forward Katie Bethke on Friday, July 1 and midfielder Lyndsey Patterson on Thursday, July 6. One game prior to the break, Beat defender Keeley Dowling suffered a season-ending ACL injury against the Breakers.
