Western New York Flash News Release
BUFFALO N.Y. - The Western New York Flash (6-0-2) of Women's Professional Soccer host the PhiladelphiaIndependence (2-2-3) Sunday evening at Sahlen Stadium in Rochester, NY at 6:00 PM. The game will be live on FOX Soccer Channel as well as webcast through the WPS homepage at www.womensprosoccer.com.
Flash back to just two weeks ago, where WNY and the Independence met for the first time in Philadelphia . The Independence struck first off of a Megan Rapinoe goal within the first ten minutes, stunning the away side. The lapse did not last for long though, as the Flash came back and scored two unanswered goals, to beat the Independence on their home turf. This Sunday the Independence will look to avenge their loss against the Flash and gain their first win in three games. Both teams are coming off a draw from last weekend, as the Flash tied Sky Blue FC 2-2, and the Independence and the Beat went scoreless. As the FIFA Women's World Cup rolls in, both teams will be without a few key players, and will look to their deep rosters for success.
The Flash will be without their WPS leading scorer, Christine Sinclair, who has been a crucial player on the forward line. They will also be without U.S. forward Alex Morgan, Swedish midfielder Caroline Seger, and Canadian Candace Chapman. The Flash will still sport their spectacle of a forward, Marta, who will be one to keep a tab on as she leads Brazil into the World Cup. New Zealand 's defender Ali Riley will also play in Sunday's game before she leaves for Europe .
While the Flash will look to different names to step up, so will the Independence as they are missing four players to the U.S. women's national team. Goal scorers Amy Rodriguez and Megan Rapinoe will be gone, as well as midfielder Lori Lindsey and goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart. The Independence recently added Spanish forward Veronica Boquete, who is no stranger to the WNY area. Boquete starred for the Buffalo Flash, helping lead the team to a W-League Championship last season, before signing with the Chicago Red Stars following the conclusion of the championship match. Boquete has already made an appearance for the Independence in their draw against Atlanta , despite arriving in Philadelphia just about a week ago. In addition to Boquete, Tasha Kai and Tina DiMartino, who are their leading scorers, will be major threats and players to watch in the game on Sunday.
The Flash will feature Tayla Kelley, a local native (Canandaigua) and 13-year-old gifted dancer at half time of the game. Kelley has dealt with primary immunity deficiency disease her entire life and brings a heartwarming, inspirational story to those who know of her struggle. She was just featured on ABC's Dancing With the Stars, as part of their "Spotlight Segment" for dancing through adversity, and will perform at half time of the Flash vs. Independence game.
