Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide News Release
OLD ORCHARD BEACH, ME - With less than three months until the Raging Tide kickoff their 2014 campaign, another familiar face makes his return and is bringing along a teammate for the ride. Skip Flanagan and Brian Sheridan have signed on to join the Tide for the summer. The hard-of-hearing RIT teammates will look to help Old Orchard Beach build off a successful 2013 season that saw them reach the Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL) semifinals.
This will be Skip's second season playing for the Raging Tide. Currently in his junior season at RIT, Skip has enjoyed much success in his first two seasons with the Tigers. During his freshman season, Flanagan featured both on the mound and in the field, playing in 35 games in the field and making ten pitching appearances, starting nine of them. His sophomore season was his breakout year at school. He was the only Tiger to play in and start all 39 games and set school records in at-bats (150) and putouts (364). He had 53 hits (3rd most all-time), 12 doubles (4th most all-time) and 35 RBI's (6th most all-time), all while batting .353 at the plate. He led the Liberty League in putouts, RBI's and was fourth in hits. While playing first base for the Tigers he recorded a .980 fielding percentage and helped turn 33 double plays.
Flanagan was a leader on and off the field for the Raging Tide during the 2013 season. His efforts earned him the FCBL's Adam Keenan Memorial Sportsmanship and Scholarship Award. The award is given to a player who exemplifies the commitment to the game of baseball and their exceptional behavior both on and off the field. This past October, Flanagan was also named Deaf Person of the Month by renowned website www.DeafPeople.com, an honor bestowed upon many prestigious community leaders and advocates.
Joining Flanagan from RIT is friend and teammate, Brian Sheridan. The 5'11" sophomore from Trumansburg, NY will look to be a force on the mound for the Raging Tide. In 11 appearances for the Tigers, Sheridan pitched 16 1/3 innings while leading the team with a dominant 1.10 ERA. At Trumansburg High School, Sheridan played three years of varsity and earned Trumansburg MVP honors during his senior year. He was also named an Interscholastic Athletic Conference All-Star.
