Port Huron Flags News Release
(PORT HURON, MICH.) - The Flags tied up a two goal deficit to the Kalamazoo Wings in the third period, and then earned a point in their second shoot-out loss of the season, as 1,585 fans looked on.
The Flags played hard during the first period, but a 5-on-3 advantage for the Wings allowed Justin Cross to score on Noah Ruden at 16:15, assisted by Casey Handrahan and Alexander Valentin. Port Huron shot on goal eight times and Kalamazoo posted seven.
Action in the second was intense and exhausting, as five penalties were called in the first five minutes. Although the Flags shot 10 times and Kalamazoo posted 12, Ruden and Ryan Nie allowed nothing in their nets.
The third period started to look bad for the Flags, as a slashing call on Josh Elzinga led to the second power play goal by Cross at 5:57, assisted by Shawn Snider and Valentin. Down 2-0, with the penalties against them, the Flags battled back. Assistant Ryan Markham scored his second goal of the year at 10:47, on an assist from B.J. Adams. McMorran Arena exploded, the fans came to life and Colt King netted his second goal of the year 20 seconds later, assisted by Jeremy Tucker. At 11:07 in the third, the Flags made a game of it, tying up the score. With only seconds left in the period, Ruden made an unbelievable glove save to send the Flags into their second shoot-out of the year.
Ruden stopped Cross and Scott Dobben's attempts to score, while Cadotte and Markham were unsuccessful. Valentin netted one, followed by a miss by Greg Bullock. Kory Karlander also capitalized, and Steve Hildenbrand was stopped by Nie, to give the win to the Wings.
AT&T's First, Second and Third Stars of the Game were awarded to Alexander Valentin, Justin Cross, and Noah Ruden, respectively. In a week, the Flags return to McMorran to play the currently undefeated Muskegon Fury.
SKATE WITH THE PLAYERS: On Sunday, Nov. 5, the Flags battle the red-hot Muskegon Fury at McMorran Arena at 5 p.m. After the game, the fans have the opportunity to take the ice with the entire team and skate, chat and collect autographs. This session is the second of six that are spread throughout the season. Don't miss your chance to skate with the players!
