Port Huron Flags News Release

(PORT HURON, MICH.) - The Port Huron Flags were bested by the Kalamazoo Wings, 3-0, ending a three-game winning streak in McMorran for the Flags.

A whistle-happy group of refs called 12 penalties in the first period, although none were felt more than the four minutes that Pat Sutton received for a high stick that drew blood from a Wing. Halfway done serving his penalty, Sutton was joined in the box by Jeremy Tucker, serving a bench minor for too many men on the ice. The 5-on-3 Kalamazoo advantage lasted just long enough for Kory Karlander to deflect the puck into the net, slightly past Dustin Traylen. Glenn Detulleo and Shawn Snider were credited with the assists. Kalamazoo recorded eight shots on goal, while Port Huron took six.

Things got physical in the second, when a team-wide scuffle exploded in front of Kalamazoo's net. Rob Snowball and Jeff Brown each received four-minute penalties for roughing. Casey Handrahan scored at 16:10, sending the Wings ahead, 2-0. Less than a minute later, Nick Toneys capitalized, assisted by Matt Johnson and Nick Bootland, putting Kalamazoo up 3-0. The Wings outshot the Flags, 14-6, in the second.

The third period passed relatively quickly, with only four penalties called. Traylen was pulled from the goal with two minutes left, setting up an empty net goal by Karlander, from Matt Johnson at 18:45. Port Huron skated hard but was unable to overcome the Wings, who have yet to lose a game held on a Teddy Bear Toss night.

AT&T's 1st, 2nd & 3rd Stars of the Game were awarded to Karlander, Ryan Nie and Colt King, respectively. The Flags travel to Elmira on Wednesday to play on the road, and then return to McMorran on Friday to face the Jackals at home. The puck drops at 7:30.
