Bridgeport, CT- The Bridgeport Bluefish (23-18) defeated the New Britain Bees (14-26) 5-4 at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Thursday evening to complete a three-game sweep of the midweek series over their Constitution State rival. The Bluefish are back to five games over .500, matching their high watermark of the season, and are now within two games of the Somerset Patriots for First Place in the First Half of the Liberty Division Standings.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Tyler Badamo collected a no-decision, allowing three runs in six innings of work, striking out three. New Britain Starting Pitcher Brian Dupra also did not factor in the game's final outcome, firing seven scoreless innings while giving up just two hits, striking out four.
New Britain took a 2-0 lead in the top half of the fourth inning against Badamo on a two-out, two run home run to right field off the bat of Jamar Walton. Walton was at it again in the top of the sixth when he plated Conor Bierfeldt with a two-out base knock that gave the visitors a 3-0 cushion. The Bees made it 4-0 in their favor in the top of the eighth on an RBI single by Yusuke Kajimoto. With their backs against the wall, the Bluefish came to bat in the home half of the eighth inning down by four runs and looking to mount a comeback, and that is exactly what they did. With runners at first and second and nobody out, Jose Gil got Bridgeport on the board for the first time on the night as he plated Luis Hernandez with an RBI single after Hernandez began the rally with a base knock of his own. After a Jonathan Galvez free pass loaded the bases with one man out, Tony Abreu gave the 'Fish a 5-4 lead with a go-ahead grand slam home run to left off losing pitcher Shawn Gilblair (0-1), and in the blink of an eye the boys from the Park City had their first lead of the night 5-4 on the first grand slam home run of the season for Bridgeport. With the tying-run at first and the lead run at the plate, Zac Grotz struck out Jonathan Griffin swinging to notch his first save of the campaign and hand Frank DeJuiluo, Jr. (1-3) the victory out of the bullpen as the 'Fish had their seventh come-from behind win in 2017 and their second overall when trailing by three runs or more. Hernandez, Abreu, Gil, Galvez and Ozney Guillen each had one of the five hits on the evening for the Bluefish.
Bridgeport now welcomes in the Long Island Ducks to The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Friday, June 2nd as the 2017 Ferry Cup continues with a single admission doubleheader, with both games slated for seven innings of play.
