Five Scoreless Innings for Brewer, Cuevas Goes Yard

Sugar Land, TX- The Bridgeport Bluefish (2-2) defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters (2-2) 7-1 at Constellation Field on Sunday afternoon to even up the seven-game season-opening series at two victories apiece. The Bluefish had at least one hit in every inning at the plate offensively, collecting 16 hits overall.

Bridgeport scored quickly off Sugar Land Starting Pitcher Zech Zinicola in the top half of the first inning when Jose Cuevas hustled down the line from third base on a wild pitch thrown by Zinicola with two men out just eluding the tag of catcher Travis Scott for the game's first run. An error by Sugar Land third baseman Chris Nelson on a ball hit by Santiago Nessy to open up the top of the fourth inning opened the floodgates for the 'Fish, as later on in the frame Jose Cuevas Launched a three-run home run off Zinicola off the faî - ade of the Wells Fargo Picnic Plaza in left field, the first big fly of the season for the 2016 Liberty Division All-Star.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Charles Brewer was solid in his Bluefish debut, and made the big pitch when he needed it the most. With runners at first and second and one out, Travis Scott drew a walk to load the bases after a 15 pitch at-bat. In stepped Nelson who bounced into an inning-ending double play as the "pitcher's best friend" got Brewer out of the jam unscathed. The visitors would add an insurance run in the eighth on a run-scoring single by Nessy to left against a drawn-in infield, plating Daniel Fields after he led off the frame with a triple. An RBI double by Alberto Callaspo in the ninth, along with a sacrifice fly from Jonathan Galvez finished off the scoring for Bridgeport. The 'Fish bullpen was solid once again, as the quartet of Frank DeJiulio, Jr., Danny Burawa, Manny Delcarmen, and David Carpenter combined to allow just one unearned run in four innings of work, striking out five.

Brewer (1-0) earned the victory, firing five scoreless innings on five hits given up, walking one and striking out two. Zinicola (0-1) tagged suffered the loss, surrendering four runs (one earned run) on eight hits, walking one, striking out three and allowing a home run and a wild pitch. Callaspo and Sean Burroughs led the way for the Bluefish with three hits each.

Bridgeport returns home for the first time in the 2017 regular season following their seven game road trip on Friday, April 28th when they host the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. First pitch on Opening Day is scheduled for 4:05. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive schedule posters presented by the Connecticut Department of Transportation. CLICK HERE for tickets.
