
Five run fourth beats Bears

NEWARK, NJ - August 13, 2006 - Led by a five run fourth inning, the Bridgeport Bluefish beat the Newark Bears 6-4 Sunday afternoon at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Despite the loss, the Bears remain in second place in the North Division five games behind the Bluefish.
The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when third baseman Victor Rodriguez singled over the head of Bluefish second baseman Steve Hine driving in Matt Brunson. Nick Steppe, who pinch ran for left-fielder Jose Herrera after he was hit by a pitch, scored the second run when first baseman Alexis Hernandez grounded into a double play.
Bridgeport came back in the top of the fourth inning with a two-run home run by left-fielder Willis Otanez, and a two run home run by center-fielder Damien Rolls (2). Third baseman Bryant Nelson bunted for an RBI scoring Hine for the fifth run.
Rodriguez cut the Bluefish lead to 5-4 with a two-out, two-run double to left center field, however Otanez hit his second home run of the game, a solo home run to put Bridgeport up 6-4 in the top of the ninth. Otanez ended the game 3-for-5 with his second and third home runs of the season.
For the Bears, Rodriguez extended his hitting streak to 15 games going 2-for-3 with three RBI, and right-fielder Al Benjamin went 1-for-4 extending his hitting streak to nine games. Shortstop Liu Rodriguez and first baseman Will Pennyfeather ended with two hits each, while Brunson ended the day with three hits.
Mike Cosgrove (0-2) took the loss after allowing five runs on five hits in 3 1/3 innings pitched, while Matt Beech (5-3) earned the victory after pitching six innings allowing two runs on six hits. The Bears bullpen allowed one run on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.
The Bears will begin a three-game series at Commerce Bank Ballpark against the Somerset Patriots on Tuesday, August 15 with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm. Carlos Mirabal (2-3) will make his 12th start of the season for Newark, against Keith Ramsey (3-5) for Somerset.
