Five More Pitchers Signed by Westerners

Danbury, CT- May 26, 2014: The Danbury Westerners, the longest tenured team in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, are proud to announce the signing of five D-1 pitchers for the 2014 season: Corey Merrill, Levi Mintz, Brian Murphy, Daniel Rankin and Andrew Schwaab

Corey Merrill (Lutcher LA) is a right-hander for Tulane University. In 2014 Corey started ten games and appeared in 14 overall. He tossed 55.0 innings, allowing 47 hits and sported a 3.60 ERA. Corey held opposing batters to a .235 batting average. Prior to coming to Tulane, Corey helped lead his team to a 29-4 record and a State Championship during his senior year by posting a 4-1 record and a 0.70 ERA. He also hit .390 during his senior campaign.

Levi Mintz (Cedar Bluff, AL) is a southpaw for Mississippi State. Levi red-shirted this season. In 2013 Levi was named the 2013 Alabama Sportswriters Association Class 1A Pitcher of the Year. Levi was also one of 18 players named to the 2013 USA Today All-USA Alabama Team. As a senior in 2013, Levi fanned 71 batters, recording a 0.99 ERA.

Brian Murphy (Wallingford, CT) is a right handed pitcher for the University of Hartford. In the 2014 season Brian made ten starts, tossing 43.0 innings and going 2-4. He posted a 4.40 ERA with 20 strikeouts. In 2013 Brian made 15 appearances, all out of the bullpen. He was fifth on the team in ERA, sporting a 4.36 mark.

Daniel Rankin (Katy, TX) is a right handed pitcher for Tulane University. In 2014 Daniel has appeared in seven games, sporting a 0-1 record and a 2.45 ERA. In 2013 Daniel made 11 appearances, including two starts and posted a 1-1 record, with a 3.42 ER A. Prior to joining Tulane Daniel was named an Underclassmen All-American by Perfect Game, and garnered All-District honors in his last three seasons.

Andrew Schwaab (O'Fallon, MO) is a right handed pitcher for the University of Missouri. Andrew appeared in 14 games, all in relief. He threw 16.1 innings, striking out six. Prior to joining the Missouri Tigers, Andrew was the 2013 Pitcher of the Year for Crowder College as the team's closer. In 26 appearances Andrew threw 30.1 innings, recording 11 saves and 37 strikeouts. He averaged 10.98 strikeouts per nine innings pitched.

Paul Schaffer, President of the Danbury Westerns, commented, "The Westerners have strong relationships with several D-1 schools, and it should not come as a surprise that we are able to sign players of this caliber. I look forward to seeing these fine young men compete for us this summer."

The 20th annual Danbury Westerners Celebrity Breakfast will be held at the Matrix on June 6th. Keynote speaker is former New York Yankee All Star catcher Rick Cerone. On June 14th the Danbury Westerners will be hosting a pre-game festival to commemorate 20 years of summer collegiate baseball. Starting at 3:00, fans are invited to come out to Rogers Park for an afternoon of music and entertainment. The Westerners will be providing free hot dogs to all guests, while supplies last.
