Five Different Wheat Kings Score In Win Over Regina

December 30, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

After beating the Saskatoon Blades 3-2 in a shootout the previous night, the Brandon Wheat Kings had already achieved that score by the end of the first period against the Regina Pats. In the third, they kept the offensive ball rolling.

Matteo Michels, Rylen Roersma, Brett Hyland, Roger McQueen, and Carter Klippenstein all scored as the Wheat Kings downed the Regina Pats 5-3. Ethan Eskit stopped 24 of 27 shots in the win.

The Wheat Kings started with a bang just a minute and a half in. Roersma broke in up the left side and fed Michels, who won his race to the net and chipped home his third goal against his old team this season.

When the power play got it's first chance to work, it didn't take long. Just seven seconds in, Roersma found himself alone at the side of the net after taking a cross-seam feed from Caleb Hadland and he wasted no time snapping it home for the 2-0 lead.

Regina got back into it off the rush, with Borya Valis feeding Tanner Howe who lifted home the first of the game for the Pats. Then, handed a questionable 5-on-3, the Pats made good on it, with Valis snapping home the tying goal.

Rather than fold, however, the Wheat Kings fought back. Hyland walked off the wall after strong cycle work and snapped home his team-leading 19th to restore the Wheat King lead in the final minute of the first.

Without any scoring to speak of in the second, the Wheat Kings held the lead going into the third, and they built on. After a big hit by Charlie Elick drew a power play, McQueen finished off a pretty passing play with Hyland and Dominik Petr to make it 4-2.

Off the rush, Klippenstein padded the lead further as he took a feed from Hyland at the top of the left circle. Wasting no time, Klippenstein snapped a bullet home to make it 5-2.

With the win, the Wheat Kings take eight of nine games in December and hold third place going into 2024. Their next game is their first of the new year in Saskatoon against the Blades on January 1 at 4:00 PM.
