New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats and Binghamton Mets split a doubleheader Sunday afternoon before 2,710 at Fisher Cats Ballpark. Behind a complete-game effort from Josh Banks, the Fishers won the opener 2-1 before Ken Chenard and two relievers combined on a five-hit shutout for the Mets in a 2-0 win in game two.
In the second game, Binghamton (10-8) scored its two runs on a pair of RBI doubles in the third inning against losing pitcher Vince Perkins (1-1). Lead-off batter Victor Hall walked. With one out, Prentice Redman doubled to the wall in left-centerfield to bring Hall home for a 1-0 lead. One out later, Mike Jacobs doubled down the rightfield line to score Redman for the final margin. Perkins went five innings, allowing two runs on three hits. He walked three and struck out one.
Chenard (2-1) tossed five scoreless frames, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out four. Jose Rodriguez, making his Mets debut, retired the side in order in the sixth inning. Tim Hamulack allowed back-to-back singles to Vito Chiaravolloti and Tim Whittaker in the seventh inning but induced a game-ending doubleplay ground out by Brad Hassey to secure his second save of the series and third of the season.
In game one, Banks (3-0) surrended only a solo home run to Prentice Redman (1) in the third inning and a two-out single to Mike Jacobs in the fourth inning to win his seventh straight decision dating back to August 12 of last season. The righthander allowed a run on two hits, struck out a season-high eight and did not walk a batter.
New Hampshire (9-9) scored two unearned runs in the first inning against losing pitcher Yusmeiro Petit (0-2). Ron Acuna was hit in the back with Petit's first pitch of the game. Carlo Cota followed with a bloop single down the rightfield line that pushed Acuna to third. Bobby Malek's throw missed the cutoff man, allowing Cota to race to second base. Acuna scored when catcher Mike Jacobs mishandled the throw home from shortstop Anderson Hernandez. Maikel Jova singled, and Ron Davenport plated Cota with a sacrifice fly to leftfield.
The Fisher Cats continue their seven-game homestand when they open a three-game series against the Harrisburg Senators Monday night at 6:35pm. Right-hander Cam Reimers (1-1, 3.06) will pitch against Harrisburg righty Darrell Rasner (1-2, 5.02).
The first 1,000 fans attending Monday's game at Fisher Cats Ballpark will receive a Maikel Jova New Hampshire Union Leader Jumbo Baseball Card. For ticket information, visit www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
