'Fish Re-Sign Abreu

(Bridgeport, Conn. - April 17, 2014) - The Bridgeport Bluefish today announced the signing of pitcher Winston Abreu. Abreu returns to Bridgeport for the second straight year during his 19th season of professional baseball.

"Winston was a huge asset to our pitching staff last season," says Bluefish manager Willie Upshaw. "We look for him once again to play an important role at the back end of our bullpen."

The right-hander began the 2013 campaign with Carmen and Veracruz of the Mexican League, before finishing the season with the Bluefish. In Mexico, Abreu went a combined 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA and three saves in 11 relief appearances. For Bridgeport, the 37-year-old pitched in 54 games going 2-0 with a 1.47 ERA and 12 saves in 55 innings. Between his time with the Bluefish and his stint in the Mexican League, the former Major Leaguer went 4-0 recording a 1.52 ERA after entering a career-high 65 games, saving 15 and striking out 56 in 65 innings.

Winston was originally signed at the age of 16 as an amateur free agent in 1993 by the Atlanta Braves. He totaled 38 games in three seasons in the big leagues with Baltimore, Washington, Tampa Bay and Cleveland. He holds a 69-51 record with a 3.36 ERA, 94 saves and 1,286 strikeouts over the course of 591 career minor league appearances.
