First Round Playoff Dates in Place for PIFL
Published on June 17, 2014 under Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) News Release
NASHVILLE, TN (June 17, 2014) - Due to division clinching wins over the weekend, the Nashville Venom (8-2) and the Trenton Freedom (8-2) of the Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) will enjoy home-field advantage for the first-round of the PIFL playoffs set to take place in three weeks.
Winners of the five straight, the expansion Nashville Venom (8-2) clinched the PIFL's American Conference with a 60-56 win over Columbus earning home-field for the semi-final playoff round which will take place on Saturday July 5th at 8:00 PM ET. Who their opponent will be has yet to be determined.
All three teams in the American Conference are mathematically alive with Columbus (5-5) having the easiest road only needing one win in either of their final two regular season games, of which includes trips to both Alabama and Georgia. In order to do so they will have to erase their current seven game road losing streak.
Meanwhile, for Alabama to advance they will have to win out their final two games (home games with Columbus and Harrisburg) and hope Georgia can defeat Columbus on the season's final weekend. The Fire will need the most help needing wins in their final two games (@Trenton and vs. Columbus) while hoping Alabama can lose their final two games.
Trenton clinched the National Conference title over the weekend with a thrilling 49-47 come- from-behind victory against the defending champion Alabama Hammers and will host their first- round opponent at the Sun National Bank Center on Saturday July 5th at 7:00 PM ET.
With Harrisburg eliminated, the Freedom will have to await the victor of the win-and-your-in game between the Raiders (5-5) and Steelhawks (5-5) on the final week of the season. If the two clubs end up tied, it will come down to whether Richmond can win the season series over Lehigh or if the Hawks upend the Raiders which will then give them the tie-breaker edge due to having the better in-conference record.
Despite both clinching their division two weeks prior to end of season, Trenton and Nashville will be closing out the season with a keen eye on earning home-field throughout the playoffs. In a possible championship preview, the Freedom and Venom close out the regular-season with a meeting in Nashville with the winner more than likely earning the top overall seed which is crucial considering home playoff teams have combined to go 6-0 the past two seasons.
