Florida Firecats News Release
Estero, FL- The arenafootball2 (af2) Florida Firecats announced today that the team has traded for offensive lineman Greg Hammond. Florida sent receiver Lamar Hughes to Peoria in exchange for Hammond. Hughes is the second player the Firecats have sent to the Pirates in as many weeks. Quarterback Todd Spitzer was traded for future considerations.
"Greg is a natural center and we are trying to add some depth at that position," said Firecats Coach Kevin Bouis. The move gives Florida four offensive linemen on the roster.
Hammond started two games for the af2's Arkansas Twisters in 2008. Prior to that he played for an indoor football team based in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The 6' 2" 338lb lineman is a Melbourne, Florida native who played his college ball at Arizona Western Junior College before transferring to Virginia Union University.
"We would like Greg to learn all three positions on the line so that he can fill in anywhere," coach Bouis added. "Injuries on our line were a big problem last year. We hope to have the depth to deal with them as they come happen during the season." Hammond is expected to arrive in Southwest Florida today.
The Firecats also plan to bring a pair of veteran linemen back into the fold this week as well. "I'd like to get Greg Walls and Alfred Peterson on the field by the end of the week. All three players will give us the opportunity to rotate our lines and keep them fresh," commented Bouis.
Florida travels to Albany, Georgia this week to play division rival South Georgia on March 28th in a rematch of the season opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30pm. The Firecats return home to Germain Arena on April 18th to play the Kentucky Horsemen.
2009 season tickets are on sale now with season-ticket packages starting as low as $108. Call 239-390-CATS (2287) to reserve your seats or visit the team online at www.FloridaFirecats.com.
