Estero, FL- With training camp nearing an end and the start of the af2 season right around the corner, the Florida Firecats added FB/LB Deon Dyer to the mix. Dyer a 6' 260lb FB out of North Carolina spent 3 seasons with the Miami Dolphins (2000-2002) seeing action in 45 games.
"He's a load, you know if he spent that much time in the NFL picking up linebackers the man can play," said Firecats Assistant Head Coach Victor Hall. "The guy wouldn't have lasted that long if he wasn't a gamer."
Dyer also spent time with the Houston Texans ('03) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ('04) practice squads before playing with the Columbus Destroyers of the AFL in '05.
At North Carolina he was named Most Outstanding Player on Special Teams as a freshman and Most Outstanding Player on Offense his senior year. Was considered to be among the best FB's entering the draft in 2000 and was selected in the 4th round by Miami.
The Chesapeake Virginia native was an All-District, All-Region and All-State selection his high school Jr. & Sr. years, running for 1790 yards and 27 TD's as a senior. Showing his strength and flexibility he also won a State Championship, both indoors and outdoors, in the Shot Put.
The Firecats will hold their final team scrimmage on Thursday March 30th before trimming the roster to prepare for the regular season.
The Florida Firecats open the 2006 season Saturday April 8th on the road against the defending Champion Memphis Xplorers. The Firecats will host the Xplorers Saturday April 22nd at Germain Arena for the home opener.
