Firecats Playing for First-Ever Division Championship

Florida Firecats News Release

Estero, FL- The Florida Firecats (9-5) headed north early Sunday morning for a rare Monday night match up with the Columbus Wardogs (6-8).

Three weeks ago, the Firecats were amid a two game skid, fighting for their playoff lives. They were playing host to the then number one ranked team in the league, the Birmingham Steeldogs. With a win, the Steeldogs would seal the American South Division championship. The Steeldogs did not even have to win the game to basically wrap up the division; they just could not let the Firecats win by more than 21 points.

Then something happened amongst the Firecat camp.

After playing arguably the best all-around game in franchise history, the Firecats left Germain Arena that night with a 55-28 win over the Steeldogs, taking the season tiebreaker and keeping alive their hopes of winning the division.

Two weeks later, the Firecats sit in a position that was barely imaginable before the game against the Steeldogs. After Birmingham dropped their third game in a row last night to the Peoria Pirates, Florida now holds their own fate. If the Firecats are able to defeat the Columbus Wardogs tomorrow night, they will win their first-ever division championship.

If Florida wins tomorrow, they also put themselves in an incredible position going into the playoffs. The Firecats play host to the Tennessee Valley Vipers for the regular season finale this Saturday. If the Firecats knock off Columbus tomorrow, and they defeat Tennessee Valley on Saturday, they will take a number two seed into the playoffs. With the number two seed, the Firecats receive a first round bye and a second round home playoff game. The Firecats would be only three wins away from the af2 championship at that point.

At this current point in the season, the playoffs are still a far off predicament. The Firecats know that they cannot overlook any opponent, and they must take care of business to fight for the 2004 ArenaCup.

"We've got to keep this drive alive," Quincy Sorrell, defensive specialist, said. "This is like our train- a train we've been trying to catch for three years.

"We just need to ride it across the nation and bring home a championship!" Sorrell concluded.

All Firecat fans are encouraged to gather at Bulwinkle's Bar and Grille for the live airing of the Florida Firecats match up with the Columbus Wardogs on Monday night. Dave Moulton will also be doing his radio show from Bulwinkle's starting at 4:00. Come be part of history as the Firecats claw for their first-ever division championship! Bulwinkle's is located on Highway 41 across from Jamaica Bay.

Come out and support your Florida Firecats on Saturday, July 31, when they host the Tennessee Valley Vipers. Some tickets still remain, but they are going fast! Call (239) 390-2287 to reserve your tickets today!
