Florida Firecats News Release

4,692 Fans were on hand to watch the Florida Firecats capture the South Division Title for the 2nd year in a row. The Firecats hosted the Macon Knights and came out with a 40-34 win thanks to a big defensive stand late in the game.

The Firecats scored on the opening drive of the game to take an early 7-0 lead as Offensive MVP Chris Wallace, who finished the night 17 of 33 for 206 yards 5 Td's and 1 INT, hooked up with Iron Man of the Game Cainon Lamb for the 1st of 2 TD's between the pair.

The Knights responded by tallying the next two scores as Lionel Hayes found WR Chris Johnson on 2 drives to close out the 1st quarter and open the 2nd and take their only lead of the game 13-7.

Chris Wallace then found Anthony Snead and Magic Benton for TD's to retake the lead before the teams traded scores to end the half with the Firecats holding on to a slim 27-20 lead as FB/LB Chris Morant intercepted Hayes' errant throw that bounced off the net in the final seconds of the half.

Macon opened the 2nd half with a 1yrd run by FB Derek Lloyd to make it 27 all. Neither team could pull away as the Knights and ‘Cats traded scores till Chris Morant scored the eventual game winner on a 1 yard plunge with 7:35 remaining in the game.

The Firecats defense was called upon to make a couple of key stops during the game, but none bigger than when Macon had the ball 3rd and goal at the ‘Cats 2 with 34 seconds to play when Tyrone Myers fumbled the ball after the team raced to the line to try and get off a quick play. Cainon Lamb recovered the ball to clinch the game and the division.

OL/DL Comone Fisher completed the Firecats sweep of the game awards by being named the Defensive Player of the Game. He finished the night 2nd on the team with 2.5 tackles and half a sack.

The win guarantees that Florida will have a 1st round bye in the post-season and will host at least one game at Germain Arena. The Firecats are 2-0 all time at home in the playoffs.
