The Tupelo FireAnts (2-11) defeated the Oklahoma Crude (2-12) tonight by a score of 43-32 at the BancorpSouth Center in Tupelo, Mississippi. The game was riddled with 27 total penalties for 145 yards. The game also marked a significant event in professional football history as Oklahoma's Monti Spiller did something extremely unusual as he passed for two interceptions on offense and grabbed an interception on defense.
Oklahoma was led by running back Travis Booker, who ran the ball for 23 yards and two touchdowns and had one reception for 25 yards and a touchdown as well. Defensive back Monti Spiller took a majority of offensive snaps in the game because starting quarterback Marvin Owens was ejected early in the first quarter of action. Spiller completed three of 15 attempts for 48 yards with a
touchdown and two interceptions. Justin Wampler and Jackie Warren had the Crude's other pass receptions. Marcus Long and Monti Spiller each had an interception on defense. Oklahoma totaled 42 yards rushing and 48 yards passing for a total of 90 yards of offense with 14 first downs and 12 penalties for 65 yards.
Your Tupelo FireAnts scoring was led by Bobby "The Ant" Hill, who ran back a kickoff and a missed field goal for touchdowns, totaling 162 yards. Quarterback Darryl Carter completed five of 16 passes for 72 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Allen Copeland ran the ball 22 times for 79 yards and a touchdown as fellow halfback Chris Edwards took nine handoffs for 39 yards and a score. Wideout Surhaver Fair hauled in two receptions for 34 yards and a touchdown. Chris Edwards had two receptions for 27 yards and Bobby Hill contributed with one reception for 11 yards. Nekemia Rich, Nick Mosley, and Courtney Dinkins each had an interception. Eric Bingham had a game-high nine tackles, including 2.5 for a loss. When all was said and done, Tupelo totaled 130 yards rushing and 59 yards passing for a total of 189 yards of offense with 15 first downs and 15 penalties for 80 yards.
The Tupelo FireAnts will conclude the 2003 season next Saturday night, July 5th versus the Ohio Valley Greyhounds (12-0) at the Wheeling Civic Center in Wheeling, West Virginia. The game kicks off at 6:05pm. For ticket information, call the âAnts at (662) 620-BITE.
