Chicago Fire FC News Release
CHICAGO, IL (August 6, 2009) - The Chicago Fire held its final Community Soccer Series of the summer today, Thursday, August 6 at Horner Park in Chicago. Fire players Andrew Dykstra and Peter Lowry participated in today's clinic - the fourth in a series of free clinics held throughout the summer that took place in neighborhoods around Chicagoland. The series was designed to instruct young athletes on the technical elements of soccer, while educating them on physical fitness, health, and wellness. The clinics were open to athletes from around the community, ages 7-14.
The clinics took place in four Chicagoland locations this summer: North Central College in Naperville and Marquette Park, McKinley Park, and Horner Park in Chicago. The clinics featured soccer drills, technique instruction, and mini-games for the kids, as well as a question and answer opportunity with two Chicago Fire players for each session and an exclusive autograph session with the players. In total, over 800 kids attended this summer's Community Soccer Series.
"The Community Soccer Series is a great opportunity for us as players to teach young kids how to be successful in soccer and also how to live a healthy lifestyle," said Peter Lowry, one of the Chicago Fire players present at the fourth series.
"These clinics allowed our players to connect one-on-one with youth throughout Chicago who play the game and look up to our guys for inspiration and leadership," said Fire Technical Director, Frank Klopas. "It's important that our team is connecting with youth on and off the pitch and the community soccer series provides a unique opportunity to do just that."
