Louisville Fire News Release

CHICAGO - Two days after being named All-af2 American Conference First team, Louisville Fire kicker DANNY KIGHT has been named the American Airlines/American Eagle Kicker of the Year, as voted on by af2 head coaches and beat writers.

Kight, in his second season, proved to be a clutch performer for the Fire in 2005. On April 15, Kight split the uprights with a 42-yard field goal at the buzzer to give the Fire a 48-46 win over the South Georgia Wildcats. On May 27, he converted an extra point with eight seconds left to tie a game against Albany at 55. The Fire went on the beat the Conquest 62-55 in overtime.

For the season the former Augusta State Jaguar converted 92-of-113 point-after-attempts to rank second in the league for PATs made. He had two perfect PAT performances, going 7-for7 against the Green Bay Blizzard on May 14 and 10-for-10 against the Quad City Steamwheelers on July 30. Only five other players in the history of the league have made more PATs in a single game without missing.

"Danny has been solid all year long. Whenever we needed a big kick we knew we could count on him," said Fire Head Coach Tommy Johnson. "The whole organization is proud of Danny and excited for him."

Kight, who played with the Indianapolis Colts from 1999-2000 and the Baltimore Ravens in 2001, also converted 9-of-20 field goal tries, including a 61-yarder on June 24 at Albany. The 61-yard field goal was the longest of the season by any kicker and the third longest in af2 history. His 45 percent field goal accuracy ranked second best in the league for kickers with 20 or more attempts.

Kight was third on his team in total scoring with 119 points, and he ranked fifth in the league among kickers in that category.

Kight is the second Fire player to win a year end award. Wide receive/defensive back Takuya Furutani was named International Player of the Year in 2004.

Kight and the Fire will face Florida this Saturday for the American Conference Championship game in Ft. Myers. The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1570-AM and 1600-AM.
