Louisville Fire News Release

Louisville Fire Head Coach Tommy Johnson announced today the Louisville Fire has been assigned quarterback Matt Sauk, 6'1" 230 lbs, by the arenafootball2 league office. Sauk was named second team All-af2 in 2001 and American Conference All-af2 second team in 2003. Sauk, who led the Tennessee Valley Vipers to a league best 14-2 record and a playoff appearance in 2003, was third in af2 in passing yards with 4,098 and third in total yards with 4,058. In 2001 Sauk led af2 in both total and passing yards while in Tennessee Valley. Sauk has thrown for 170 touchdowns in his two year af2 career while throwing only 34 interceptions and completing 59.9% of his passes. Sauk was with the L.A. Avengers of the Arena Football League during the 2002 season.

"Matt brings us an experienced arena quarterback who knows how to win games," commented Coach Johnson. "He also brings a lot of the intangibles that can't be taught."

Sauk played under University of Louisville head football coach Bobby Petrino at Utah State and led the Aggies to a Humanitarian Bowl appearance in 1997. "It will be very exciting for me to have Matt come to Louisville and watch him play for the Fire. He was a very good player for us at Utah State, leading us to a bowl game his senior year. He has a strong arm, quick release, and is very competitive," said U of L Head Coach and Fire season ticket holder Bobby Petrino.

Also joining the Fire for the 2004 season is WR/DB Ryan Russell who spent two games with the Cincinnati Swarm in 2003. DS Corey Wallace who joined the Fire four games into the 2003 season and contributed solidly on defense with 44 tackles and 12 pass deflections. The fourth and final player is OL/DL Heath Springer, who played with Sauk in Tennessee Valley in 2001, and recorded 12.5 sacks in a season and a half with Tennessee Valley.

The Fire will open 2004 with and exhibition game against the All-Japan Samurai Warriors on March 21. Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling (502)368-0009.
