Louisville Fire News Release
Louisville, KY - The Louisville Fire defense came into tonight's game wanting to prove a point. And they did early on when Fire WR/LB Lawrence Matthews, US Army Ironman of the Game, intercepted San Diego's Kane Clauch on the first play of the game and took it to the end zone to put the Fire up 7-0. The Fire would never trail again.
On the Riptide's second drive Matthew's again picked off Clauch. The Fire would score just a few seconds later to take a 13-0 lead. The Fire never trailed in the game, even though the Riptide did come back to tie the score 13-13 after the first quarter.
The Fire defense then turned it up another notch shutting the Riptide out in the second and third quarter. The Fire scored 28 unanswered points to take a 41-13 lead into the final quarter of play. The Fire would add 21 more in the fourth to win their eighth game of season 62-40.
Fire QB Matthew Sauk, Offensive Player of the Game, continued his assault on the af2's touchdown record with seven more touchdowns tonight to bring his total to 77 for the season. The Fire's Nate Green was named ADT Defensive Player of the Game for his seven tackles (6U, 2A), half a tackle for a loss and five pass break-ups. The victory clinches the Fire's second straight playoff appearance.
