Finneran leads Lizards to 14-12 win in Philadelphia

The Long Island Lizards defeated the Philadelphia Barrage, 14-12, in front of 2,207 fans at Villanova Stadium on Sunday evening. Kevin Finneran was named Bud Light MVP, scoring four goals and adding two assists to lead the Lizards offense, while Brian Dougherty was stellar in goal, recording 21 saves. Both Finneran and Dougherty hail from the Philadelphia area, and played in front of many friends and family members.

Chris Massey scored four goals for Long Island, including a natural hat-trick in the first quarter that gave the Lizards an early 5-1 lead. The Lizards kept the pressure on, with balanced scoring from A.J. Haugen (2G, 2A) and Tim Goettelmann (1G, 1A).

The Lizards never trailed in the game, but Philadelphia tied the game late in the fourth quarter. Long Island was able to re-take the lead, and Finneran scored with two minutes left to put the game out of reach, giving Long Island a 14-11 lead. Philadelphia scored their 12th goal, and Brian Dougherty turned away a two-point shot with six seconds remaining to secure the win.

Jay Jalbert, Conor Denihan, and Jarred Testa each added a goal. Testa was playing in his first game as a Lizard and did not dissapoint. Kevin Lowe tallied three assists, while Andrew Wasik rounded out the scorecard with one assist.

Long Island improves to 2-1, and will meet the Boston Cannons (3-0), the only undefeated team in the league, in a home-and-home series. The Lizards host the Cannons first, on Saturday, June 12th at Mitchel Field. Faceoff is slated for 7:30 PM.
