Charlottetown, PE - The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League today announced the three finalists for this season's Kia Humanitarian of the Year Award. Nicholas Blagden of the Saint John Sea Dogs, Brett Budgell of the Charlottetown Islanders and Xavier Parent of the Sherbrooke Phoenix are the three players in contention.
Nicholas Blagden has been involved in raising awareness on mental health issues. In August 2021, he started a speaker series about his mental health journey. His main objective was to educate and raise awareness on the issue in sports in his community. He has spoken to many groups, from elementary school to university students. Blagden has helped several people find the proper support to deal with mental health issues.
Brett Budgell has partnered with the Upper Room Hospitality Ministry during the past two seasons. This non-profit organization strives to meet the food needs of people in the community. He spearheaded the organization's largest donation initiative this year. Brett also created the "Fill the Net Food Drive" which encouraged Islanders fans to donate to their local food bank during home games in December.
Despite dealing with strict COVID-19 protocols, Xavier Parent found a way to get involved in the Sherbrooke community. Last November, he organized a successful Movember fundraiser to raise awareness for Prostate Cancer research, a cause that he deeply believes in. He raised almost $3,000 through this endeavour. On top of it, he was involved with local schools and the Dixville Foundation.
