Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Dubuque Fighting Saints completed Phase I of the 2022 USHL Draft on Monday. Led by GM and President of Hockey Operations Kalle Larsson and the rest of his hockey operations staff, the team selected seven forwards, two defensemen and one goalie in the opening part of the draft.

Here are the Saints' selections in order, followed by comment from a member of the hockey operations staff:

Round 1, 12th overall - F Gavin Cornforth (Thayer Academy)

Larsson: Gavin is a speedy, dynamic forward with the ability to make and finish plays. We're excited he's a Fighting Saint.

Round 2, 27th overall - F Colin Frank (Anaheim Jr. Ducks U16)

Trevor Edwards, scout: The best way to describe Colin is a big-time playmaker who thrives in the big moments. Hoping he has some big moments here in Dubuque.

Round 3, 42nd overall - D Julian Brown (North Jersey Avalanche U15)

Andrew Weiss, scout: Julian is a high-end defenseman who really caught our eye in Buffalo at the National Player Development Camp at the beginning of the season. He continued to have a great year in New Jersey.

Round 4, 57th overall - F Michael Barron (Victory Honda U15)

Edwards: Michael is a dynamic play driver. He has a high compete level. He's one of the best players in Michigan.

Round 5, 72nd overall - G Thatcher Bernstein (Noble & Greenough School)

Weiss: I thought Thatcher was the best goalie at the National Player Development Camp in Buffalo. He really stood out at one of the best prep schools out there. Smart kid, too.

Round 6, 87th overall - F Charlie Arend (Chicago Mission U15)

Larsson: Charlie is an honest two-way player. He was a very consistent player for a tremendous Chicago Mission team.

Round 8, 117th overall - F Gavin Garland (Delta Hockey Academy U17)

Dan Shrader, scout: Gavin is a team first, 200-foot player. He played for a really strong Delta squad. Dual citizen too. We're extremely excited to get him.

Round 9, 132nd overall - F Bobby Bartell (Chicago Mission U15)

Larsson: Bartell is a heart and soul guy who won a national championship with the Chicago Mission. He's a versatile player who brings it every night.

Round 9, 135th overall - F Patrick Fortune (Pittsburgh Penguins Elite U15)

Shrader: Patrick is super skilled and productive. He reminds us a lot of Ryan Beck. He's a longtime teammate of Colin Frank.

Round 10, 147th overall - D Aron Kiviharju (TPS Turku)

Larsson: Aron is a dynamic defenseman. He's one of the top players in Europe.

Tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. CDT, the Saints will close out the draft with Phase II. Follow along live, pick-by-pick by following on our social media pages.
