Prowlers Win Fight-Filled Contest Over Bulldogs
By: Tommy Pecoraro
It was game filled with intensity and some good goaltending, as the game stayed low scoring through most of the contest. Brewster goaltender Jeromy Semtner had a good night in goal and overall defensively the Bulldogs were solid. However the offense was lacking as MJ Graham and Ian Delong are out of action, and could not muster more than a single goal, and it was Port Huron winning the 3 points.
Dustin Skinner scored the first goal of the game for Port Huron early on to give Port Huron the lead. Things got physical as Joe Cannan dropped the gloves with Ryan Devine at the 11 minute mark, and both picked A few minutes later, Janis Berzins, in his first game of the season, scored one of the best goals around the league so far this year, from the blueline he deked out Joe Pace, then Andy DiCristofaro for a beautiful goal to tie the game. However Port Huron was quick to respond, and Justin Alonzo scored to make it 2-1. In the 2nd period, Justin Alonzo scored another goal to make it 3-1, and then things got crazy at the end of the 2nd. A hit from behind by Nikolai Okhlobystin set off a series of battles, first as Okhlobystin had to hold off Justin Alonzo in a fight, before Ryan Devine came over and forced Ryan Dolence to intervene and fight him as well. In the 3rd period a major bench miscue resulted in Brewster only starting a faceoff with 4 skaters on the ice, and Port Huron took advantage, springing Dustin Skinner on a breakaway to make it 4-1. Mark Rivera added an empty netter to make it 5-1.
For Brewster, Janis Berzins had the lone goal, and James Robbins stopped 29 of 33 shots for the loss. For Port Huron, Dustin Skinner and Justin Alonzo had 2 goals each, Mark Rivera had a goal and assist, Brian Soskin and Ahmed Mahfouz had 2 assists each. Andy DiCristofaro stopped 37 of 38 shots for the victory.
Port Huron returns home tomorrow night to take on the Dayton Demolition, who lost 5-0 tonight to Danville. The Bulldogs have tomorrow off before hosting the Berlin River Drivers on Friday, Berlin coming off a 3-2 win over Danbury tonight. Brewster and Port Huron meet again at the McMorran Place Arena on Saturday Night. Paid attendance at tonight's game was 218.
