FHL Game Recaps

December 13, 2015 - Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL) News Release

Rivera's Hat Trick Leads Prowlers Over Bulldogs

By: Tommy Pecoraro

The Bulldogs arent getting much luck since their last win on Thursday in Danbury, meanwhile the Port Huron Prowlers have been the opposite, winning all of their games this weekend, keeping them among the top 3 teams in the league, with Danville and Danbury, who all are running away from the bottom three, Dayton, Berlin and Brewster, in the standings. Despite that, it was a relatively close game and the best of the three games the Bulldogs played despite losing. Brewster nearly rallied from a 4-1 deficit, albeit coming up just short in the end.

Play was relatively even in the first period, and both goaltenders, James Robbins and Jonah Imoo, were kept busy but not overwhelmed. Port Huron scored twice in the opening frame, from Roger Tagoona and Mark Rivera. In the 2nd period things got heated after a hit from behind by Michael Paquette sparked two fights, Paquette and Chris Wilcox, against Leonard Pelletier and Dustin Skinner. although these would be the only fights of the night, both teams would play physical the remainder of the contest. Shortly after the fights, a Brewster power play was capitalized as Sean Maktaak hit the back of the net with a shot and cut the lead to 2-1. Port Huron would respond less than two minutes later as Mark Rivera scored his 2nd goal of the night. Down 3-1 in the 3rd period, the Bulldogs played their best 20 minutes in the last 3 games. After falling down to 4-1 after another goal by Mark Rivera to complete the hat trick, Brewster struck with two quick goals in close succession to put pressure back on the Prowlers. Those goals were scored by Zach Hale and John Scully, 2:12 apart. Port Huron stayed cool under pressure, and a James Robbins turnover behind the net was easily pounced upon by Roger Tagoona for his 2nd goal of the game on a wide open net, definitely one Robbins will hope to forget as soon as possible. The final Port Huron goal was scored by Jay Kenney on an empty net to make it 6-3.

For Brewster, John Scully had a goal and 2 assists, Zach Hale and Sean Maktaak had a goal each. James Robbins stopped 27 of 32 shots for the loss. For Port Huron, Mark Rivera had 3 goals, Roger Tagoona with 2 goals, and Jay Kenney with a goal and assist. Jack Callahan and Robert Vanwynsberghe had two assists each. Jonah Imoo stopped 58 of 61 shots for the victory.

This game concluded both team's weekends, and both will get some rest in the coming day before getting back to work. Port Huron's next game is in Dayton on Thursday the 17th, followed by a home game against Berlin on Saturday the 19th another game in Dayton on Sunday the 20th. The Bulldogs are home against Danville on Friday the 18th and home against Danbury on Sunday the 20th, which will be played on an outdoor rink at the Brewster Ice Arena complex, the first outdoor FHL game since 2013 when the Williamsport Outlaws were in the FHL. The attendance for tonight's contest was 125.
