Brooklyn Erupts with Five Straight in Final Period
DANBURY, Connecticut - The Brooklyn Aviators erupted with five straight third period goals to skate past the Danbury Whalers, 8-1, on Friday night in Federal Hockey League action.
In his first game as a Brooklyn Aviator, former AHL and ECHL forward, Vladimir Nikiforov, scored two goals and registered three assists for five points to pace the Brooklyn offense.
Brooklyn (2-1-1) opened the scoring at the 10:08 mark of the first period, after Nikiforov netted his first of the season on the power play. Nikiforov, who signed with the Aviators earlier in the week, deposited the loose puck in front of Whalers' netminders Nick Niedert to give Brooklyn the 1-0 edge.
With 2:24 left to go in the frame, Nikiforov set up Jordan Bernier with a beautiful pass in front of the crease, which was easily tapped in by the rookie putting the Aviators up 2-0 on his second of the year. Chris Jones would then give Brooklyn a 3-0 advantage, after he snapped the puck past the left pad of Niedert short side on the man advantage as time expired in the first. For Jones, that was his second marker of the season as well.
Thirty-one seconds into the second stanza, Brooklyn rookie Anthony Iaquinto and Whalers tough guy Corey Fulton dropped the gloves at center ice, which seemed to spark the Danbury offense. Shortly after, Danbury (1-2-0) forward Chris Seifert wristed a shot behind Aviators goalie Tommy Lee to pull the Whalers within two, 3-1, at the 1:35 mark.
Danbury registered the only goal in the middle period, but both goalies put on show stopping a combined 24 of 25 shots, respectively.
The Aviators popped in five straight in the third period, lead by Brooklyn forward Chris Ferazzoli, who had two in the frame. Rookie Ken Trentowski collected his firs pro goal in the third, while Benier and Nikiforov both netted their second of the contest.
Lee stopped 29 shots to earn his second victory of the year, while Niedert is charged with the loss despite putting aside 45 saves.
The Brooklyn Aviators return home on Saturday night to the Aviator Sports and Events Center to take on the Cape Cod Bluefins. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 pm, and can be heard live on the Aviators radio network, powered by Live Sports Video. Privateers Win Home Opener
Alexandria Bay, NY - The 1000 Islands Privateers opened their home-ice season in grand style with a 10-4 victory over the visiting Vermont Wild. In front of a home audience of 1057, the Privateers capitalized on the fast play of Justin Levac and Paul Kelly. In a spirited game full of action and altercations, the home opener was all that was expected and anticipated.
Vermont opened the play early with an unassisted goal from Jon Esposito. That led to a furious response from the Privateers leading to 4 unanswered first period goals, with Levac catching net first, followed by goals from Ky Moje, and Mason Cossette, with an additional 2 from Kelly. Derek Osbourne closed out the scoring for Vermont in the first period with a stinger from the slot.
The Privateers and Vermont split the second period with a single netter each, leading to a third period onslaught by the Privateers that saw goals by Levac, Adam McAllister, Moje and Jeff Winchester. Vermont closed out the scoring in the game with another tag by Esposito.
The victory propelled the Privateers winning streak to 3, and cemented the Privateers as the only undefeated team in the FHL. They will face the Danville Dashers on Thursday, November 10th at home at the Bonnie Castle Rec Center in Alex Bay.
