FHL Connected: Game Recaps March 18, 2016

March 18, 2016 - Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL) News Release

DiCristofaro and Prowlers Blank Brewster 6-0

By: Tommy Pecoraro

The Bulldogs have been hot lately, going 3-1-1 in their last 5. They came in only 3 points behind 4th place Berlin, and Port Huron came in well into a playoff position, yet shorthanded, with only 12 skaters. Despite the odds, the Prowlers came up victorious by a wide margin, well in part due to a spectacular performance by The Pharaoh, Andy DiCristofaro.

The Bulldogs came out sluggish, perhaps underestimating the ability of Port Huron coming into the game, and feeling confident off the previous night's victory. The Prowlers used that advantage and took it to Brewster early, scoring 3 goals in the opening frame within 3:30 of playing time. Jason Pietrasiak would score his 4th of the season at the 5:38 mark from Justin Alonzo and Roger Tagoona. 50 seconds later, it was Justin Alonzo scoring his 25th of the season to make it 2-0, assisted by Ahmed Mahfouz and Lenny Pelletier. Just over 2 minutes later at the 8:45 mark, the Tagsmanian Devil, Roger Tagoona would add another goal, and Justin Alonzo would gain another assist. The goal was Tagoona's 18th of the season. This goal would chase James Robbins, and Jeromy Semtner would go between the pipes in his place from this point.

The Bulldogs had a much better 2nd period, outshooting and outpacing the Prowlers. However, they simply could not solve Andy DiCristofaro, and were scoreless again in the 2nd period, and not even their improved power play goal beat him. Jeromy Semtner, meanwhile, kept the Bulldogs in the game to his best ability, not allowing any goals in the 1st or 2nd periods.

In the 3rd period, time started becoming the enemy of the Bulldogs, and they still could not find a way to beat DiCristofaro. There were bounces that just barely missed the net, and wide open nets either saw misplayed shots that missed the net, or on the shots that would be able to go in, DiCristofaro would have an answer and a save for each attempt. The Prowlers had seen enough, and at 3:35, Jason Pietrasiak would score his 2nd goal of the game and 5th of the season, from Jared Hicks and Roger Tagoona. The Bulldogs were disheartened at this point and seemed to play conservatively the rest of the night. There would be a brief fight minutes later, between Ryan Devine and Sean Sullivan, lasting mere seconds and both would sit for most of the remainder of the game. The last 2 goals of the game were off setups that evaded the attention of not only the Brewster defence, but Semtner himself, seemed to be fooled. The first one, at 13:19, scored by Justin Alonzo, on a direct cross slot feed from Ahmed Mahfouz. It was Alonzo's 2nd of the game and 26th of the season. The 2nd goal was scored by Ahmed Mahfouz himself at the 15:36 mark, his 19th of the year from Dustin Skinner and Justin Alonzo. 6-0 would be the final score.

For Brewster, James Robbins stopped 8 of 11 shots, and Jeromy Semtner stopped 13 of 16 for the loss. For Port Huron, Justin Alonzo had 2 goals and 3 assists, Jason Pietrasiak had 2 goals, Ahmed Mahfouz and Roger Tagoona had a goal and 2 assists each, and Andy DiCristofaro stopped all 44 Brewster shots for the victory and his 2nd shutout of the season.

The Bulldogs wrap up the weekend tomorrow night in Berlin, taking on the River Drivers, whom they defeated 4-2 last night and lost 11-1 tonight in Danbury. The Prowlers will take on the same Danbury Titans tomorrow night before also traveling to Berlin on Sunday to take on the River Drivers. Attendance for tonight's game was 190.

As of tonight, Dayton moves into 4th place with 52 points, which is tied with Berlin, however Dayton has a game at hand, therefore possessing a higher point percentage. The River Drivers, therefore, are now out of a playoff spot for the time being and the Brewster Bulldogs remain in 6th place, 3 points behind both teams and having played one more game than Berlin and 2 more than Dayton. Port Huron inches closer to 2nd place Danville, who they trail by 4 points but have 2 games at hand on, and Danbury maintains their solid position in 1st place, reaching the 100 point plateau with 102 points, 10 more than 2nd place Danville.

Titans Wins Ninth Straight, Rout RiverDrivers 11-1

By Zak McGinniss

DANBURY, CT -- Bryan Dallaire and John Scorcia both scored a hat trick while Ryan Patsch and Phil Bronner recorded Gordie Howe hat tricks of their own as the Titans cruised against the Berlin RiverDrivers by a score of 11-1. With the win, Danbury Head Coach Phil Esposito recorded the 150th win of his storied career in Danbury.

The first period started innocently enough with the Titans jumping out to a 2-0 lead. Scorcia would get Danbury on the board less than 5 minutes in, beating Berlin's Paul Bourbeau Jr through the five hole. The game winning goal would come off the stick of Bryan Dallaire on the power play towards the end of the period. He provided an immediate offensive impact in his first game in Danbury since January after being loaned to the Mississippi RiverKings of the SPHL. Danbury would outshoot Berlin 16-7 in the period as Berlin struggled to hold on.

Danbury would score twice in the second period as well, with Ryan Patsch and John Scorcia scoring short handed to chase Bourbeau Jr from the net. With three fights, however, the second period was marked by much more physicality. Bronner would square off with Chris Wilcox, winning a clean decision. Ryan Patsch would come to the defense of leading scorer Tyler Gjurich after he was on the receiving end of a charge from Andre Niec. The main event was between the heavyweights, Anthony Pisano and Nicolas Wright, and the two threw haymakers at center ice to the delight of the crowd. Danbury again outshot Berlin, 22-4, but that was only a harbinger of things to come.

The Danbury Titans would set a franchise record with seven goals in the third period. Dallaire would score two within the first 3:36 of the period to secure his first professional hat trick. Nicolas Wright would get Berlin on the board to ruin the shutout for Danbury's Nikita Ivandikov. After that, the deluge continued, as Mike Henderson responded for Danbury less than a minute later. Scorcia would complete his hat trick next, followed by Ian Delong, Bronner, and Dean Yakura to round out the scoring.

Danbury's win extends their first place lead to 10 points over the Danville Dashers as the regular season winds to a close. Meanwhile, with Dayton's win coupled with the Berlin loss, the RiverDrivers have fallen out of the playoffs. Nikita Ivandikov remains perfect in North America with his fifth win in as many games. Phil Esposito will go for win 151 tomorrow night against the Port Huron Prowlers with a 7:35pm faceoff. For tickets and more information, contact the Danbury Titans by calling 844-DT-HOCKEY.

Demolition Plays Leapfrog, Strong Hockey in 5-2 Win over Danville

By Lee W. Mowen

DAYTON, OHIO- The Dayton Demolition played a strong game of hockey and some jumping of the standings with a 5-2 win over the Danville Dashers. Dayton came out strong in the opening frame, continuously fought back when the Dashers scored, and held a powerful offense at bay throughout most of the competition with Jo St. Pierre anchoring the pipes.

In the 1st Period, Scott Kozlak and Robert Vanwynsberghe brought the offense home against Dashers' starter Matt Anthony. At the 10:40 mark, Kozlak found the bouncing puck from Martin Uhnak's first shot, angling his 16th goal of the year. Brett Wall found Uhnak near the crease, and Dayton took a 1-0 lead. Shortly after Kozlak's score, it was Vanwynsberghe's turn to find the back of the net. Michael Dolman led the puck down to the attacking zone, finding Vanwynsberghe in the slot to give the Wrecking Crew a 2-0 lead and his sixth Dayton goal of the season (his 12th overall in 29 games.)

Danville answered with two goals in the 2nd Period, with Dayton answering back shortly after each strike. The first Dashers score was at the 3:58 mark, when Justin Levac dragged the puck to the far face-off circle blasting his 12th goal of the season. Dayton had an answer thirty seconds after, with Adam McKenzie scoring his first of the year on some solid rotation from the far point. Uhnak connected on his second assist of the night, finding McKenzie at the right time and place to put the lead back up to two at 3-1.

At the 12:41 of the 2nd, it was Justin Brausen recreating the previous Dasher goal, with his setup in the far faceoff circle. Brausen's 38th tally of the year was connected with Ryan Stouffer and Ray Tremblay. Just over two minutes gone from what turned out to be the Dashers' last score, it was Cory Giroux lighting the lamp. At the 14:54, Brian Marks found Martin Uhnak close to the net of Anthony, when the puck slipped away to Giroux unmarked in the near faceoff circle. Giroux's 5th Dayton goal of the year gave Dayton a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes.

Both teams flew quickly down the ice in the 3rd period, with each team getting respectable chances and both goalies showing their game. The Demolition got their chance for their fifth goal of the night on Danville's 6-on-4 Extra Attacker. It was Uhnak angling a straight-shot into the empty net for the icing on the 5-2 win, with Jo St. Pierre picking up his third assist and Myles McCauley with his 16th. The Demolition won 5-2, but not before a scrap between Chris Affinati of Danville and Dayton's Jay Kenney. Dayton outshot the Dashers 36-34 on the contest.

Dayton improved to 17-25-5 on the season and jumped to 4th place in the FHL, the last playoff spot. Danville fell to 30-14-5 with the loss, dropping six of the last seven with Dayton and five of the last six overall.

Jo St. Pierre picked up the 3rd star with the win, 32 saves, and one assist. Adam McKenzie scored the 2nd star with his first goal in Dayton. Martin Uhnak registered the top star with three assist and one goal on the contest.

Danville and Dayton will tangle one last time at Hara Arena in the regular season on Saturday, March 19th at 7:30. For tickets, broadcasting links, and event information, visit DaytonProHockey.com!
