Bronner's Late Goal Lifts Danbury Over Port Huron

By: Tommy Pecoraro

The Titans and Prowlers came into tonight's game fresh off losses, Danbury off two consecutive against Berlin, and Port Huron coming off a convincing victory by the Brewster Bulldogs over Port Huron. The Prowlers also came into tonight's game with Julian Fraser and coach Trevor Karasiewicz from suspension, and the addition of Ben Schoeneberger, and looked upon them to get a much needed boost, both player would score and the Prowlers played a better game with their coach back behind the bench, however it was not enough as the Titans scored late to win 5-4.

Danbury struck early, 3 minutes into the 1st as Mike Driscoll, who has had the most success of any Danbury player against Port Huron, scored to make it 1-0. Things got heated later in the 1st and a brief fight occurred between Tyler Gjurich and Leonard Pelletier. The Prowlers would gain momentum and tie the game later off a goal from Julian Fraser. In the 2nd period Tyler Gjurich would finish the Gordie Howe hat trick with a goal 2:38 into the period, and shortly after Dean Yakura scored a beautiful goal off a great feed from Brett Liscomb to make it 3-1. At the halfway mark, however, Port Huron went to work on the power play, and Justin Alonzo would bury to make it 3-2. It didn't take long into the 3rd period, 38 seconds in fact, for Port Huron to tie things back up, as Brian Soskin finished off a Prowlers offensive storm to make it 3-3. Later in the 3rd it was the Prowler Slayer, Mike Driscoll, adding another goal to make it 4-3 with 10 minutes remaining. The Prowlers were down but not out, and with just over 7 minutes left and on a power play, it was former Danbury Whaler Ben Schoeneberger blasting one past Mike Pearless to tie the game. Minutes later Andy DiCristofaro, annoyed with Brett Liscomb giving a snow shower to him while covering the puck, let his stick do the talking and was penalized for slashing. Late in the ensuing power play, it was Phil Bronner who snapped it past the very same netminder, and Port Huron could not respond, giving Danbury a much needed victory.

For Danbury, Mike Driscoll had 2 goals, Tyler Gjurich with a goal and 2 assists (plus a fighting major for a Gordie Howe Hat Trick), Phil Bronner had a goal and assist, and Dean Yakura had a goal. Brett Liscomb had 4 assists and John Scorcia had 2 assists. Mike Pearless stopped 30 of 34 shots for the victory. For Port Huron, Justin Alonzo had a goal and 2 assists, and with a goal each were Brian Soskin, Julian Fraser, and Ben Schoeneberger. Jared Hicks and Jason Pietrasiak each had 2 assists. Andy DiCristofaro stopped 36 of 41 shots for the loss.

The Prowlers have 3 games next weekend, starting Thursday, February 11th in Danville, followed by 2 home games on Friday and Saturday, also against Danville. For the Titans, they will be home Friday, February 12th against border rival Brewster, followed by a Saturday night tilt in Brewster before returning home to face the suddenly-hot Dayton Demolition on Sunday. Paid attendance for tonight's game at the Danbury Arena was 1,578.
