Tri-Cities Fever News Release
The Fever rallied from a nine-point third-quarter deficit and had a chance to tie the game in the final 90 seconds, but a missed extra point proved to be the difference.
Pat McCain hit Akeem Foster on a 24-yard pass play with 1:22 left to get the Fever (0-2) to within 47-46, however, Steve Wakefield missed the game-tying extra point. The Fever would not get the ball back. Wakefield was 4 of 5 on extra points in the game. He also made two field goals.
Tri-Cities returns home Saturday night, searching for its first win of the season against the Billings Wolves. Kickoff is 7:05 p.m.
The Fever, coming off a 60-51 loss to the expansion Empire a week earlier, played even with the Danger all night, holding leads in the second and fourth quarters.
DeSean Martin caught a 5-yard pass from McCain to give Tri-Cities as 40-39 lead with 4:54 left in the game.
Jameel Sewell, one of the best quarterbacks in the league, brought the Danger (1-0) back on the next possession, scoring on a 2-yard run with 2:26 remaining in the fourth quarter to give the Danger a 47-40 edge.
The Fever fell behind early for the second straight game, but recovered late in the second quarter to take a 24-23 lead at halftime after a 36-yard field goal by Wakefield.
Behind quarterbacks Hunter Wanket and McCain, the Fever racked up 287 yards of total offense. The two combined to pass for 261 yards and four touchdowns on 19 of 34 passing.
Foster led all receivers with 98 yards receiving on five catches and he scored two touchdowns. Dejay Lester had a game-high six catches for 85 yards.
Sewell, the league's most valuable player last season, struggled passing the ball in his first game of the season, completing just 6 of 19 passes for 82 yards. He threw two touchdowns and three interceptions. But he more than made of for the throwing mistakes with his legs. He ran the ball 10 times for 109 yards and four touchdowns.
Leon Jackson led the Fever with nine tackles, including one tackle-for-loss. Boubacar Cissoko had two interceptions in the game.
