Lancaster JetHawks News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - Despite another first-inning lead, the JetHawks could not hold on, falling to the Stockton Ports 8-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Banner Island Ballpark.
For the second day in a row, the JetHawks (11-15) took an early lead on a leadoff home run. The homer was Jose Fernandez' second of the season and extended his hitting streak to 14 games.
But again, the lead was short-lived. Starting pitcher Blaine Sims (1-4) allowed a game-tying solo homer to Nick Rickles in the second, and after a walk to Franklin Barreto, B.J. Boyd gave the Ports (13-13) the lead on a RBI double.
Ports starter Dillon Overton held Lancaster scoreless in his final three innings of work, striking out four and walking one. Sam Bragg (1-2) pitched three scoreless innings of relief, striking out four and earning the win.
Stockton added two more runs in Sims' final inning, the fifth. Boyd hit a one-out solo home run, and Michael Soto added onto the Ports' lead with an RBI single.
The left-hander finished with a walk and three strikeouts, allowing four runs on five hits.
In the eighth, the Ports rallied for four runs against tandem starter Adrian Houser. Rickles hit an RBI single and Boyd plated a run on a fielder's choice grounder, making the score 6-1. J.P. Sportman and Branden Cogswell then hit consecutive RBI singles.
Trevor Bayless walked two batters in the top of the ninth, but worked his way out of the jam to hand the JetHawks their sixth straight loss.
Lancaster stranded seven runners and went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
The JetHawks will face the Ports in the third game of the series Wednesday evening at Banner Island Ballpark. Edison Frias (2-2, 4.50) will start for Lancaster, and Lou Trivino (2-0, 2.16) will pitch for Stockton. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
