Houston Comets News Release
HOUSTON - The Houston Comets announced today that the team has signed guard Felicia Ragland to a free agent contract. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
"Felicia is an athletic player who is very explosive penetrating to the basket," said Head Coach and General Manager Van Chancellor on the addition of Ragland. "She also has a nice outside shot, which strengthens us even more on the perimeter."
Ragland (5-9, Oregon State '02) will be entering her third season in the WNBA, averaging 4.3 points, 0.7 assists and 1.5 rebounds in 34 career games with the Seattle Storm and Phoenix Mercury. In 2003, Ragland scored five points while registering two assists, two rebounds and a pair of steals in three games with the Mercury. Ragland, who signed with Phoenix on May 25, was placed on the injured list with a sore lower back on June 3. She was activated and released by the Mercury on June 9. Ragland actually began the 2003 season with the Storm before being waived in training camp on May 9. She was then signed by the Indiana Fever on May 15, but was waived on May 19.
Selected by Seattle in the second round (28th overall) of the 2002 WNBA Draft, Ragland averaged 4.5 points and 1.5 rebounds in 31 games as a rookie. She started three games (6/14, 6/15 and 6/18) and scored in double-figures five times (15 vs. New York on 5/30, 19 at Phoenix on 6/14, 12 vs. Sacramento on 6/23, 11 at Cleveland on 7/5 and 19 vs. Los Angeles on 7/11). Ragland scored a career-high 19 points in her first career start at Phoenix on June 14, and equaled that mark again vs. Los Angeles on July 11.
A four-year starter at Oregon State, Ragland earned Honorable Mention Associated Press All-American, District 8 Kodak All-American and All-Pacific-10 Conference honors as a senior.
