Federico Baez Signs with Reds

CAMDEN - The Camden Riversharks announced today that right handed pitcher Federico Baez has signed a minor league contract with the Cincinnati Reds organization. This will be his third stint with a major league affiliated team. He has also been added to the provisional roster for the Puerto Rican national team in the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
Baez debuted in the minor leagues as a middle infielder with the Orioles in 2001. One year later, he signed with the Chicago Cubs organization, where he began the transformation of becoming a pitcher. Playing in the Cubs' farm system for six years, Baez developed into a dependable pitcher, and eventually played for the team's AAA affiliate in Iowa from 2005 through 2007. During his time in the minor leagues, Baez showed the ability to work out of the bullpen, or as part of a starting rotation.
Last season, Baez appeared in 19 games for the Riversharks, and finished the year with a 2-4 record. He pitched 35.2 innings, allowed 24 earned runs, and struck out 32 batters. His ERA in 2008 was 6.06.

Baez is the thirteenth player from the Riversharks' 2008 roster to sign with a major league affiliated organization. Last season, the Riversharks won the first half divisional championship, as well as a Liberty Division Championship.
