Dayton Soars Past Steel City 12-1

By Derek Andrews

(Dayton, Ohio ) The Dayton Demonz came into the game fighting for first place in the final regular season standings. Steel City arrived in town coming off a 16-0 defeat at Berkshire. The visitors would leave town after suffering another defeat as Dayton peppered the Warriors goal with an unbelievable 73 shots in a 12-1 victory.

Heavily favored Dayton scored 39 seconds into the contest on a pass from Jared Hicks to Ahmed Mahfouz down low. The goal was his 33rd of the season and the Demonz led 1-0. Hicks scored himself midway through the period on an assist from Mahfouz and Dayton went up 2-0. That score held up after one period of play. The Demonz outshot the Warriors 24-7 in the initial 20 minutes.

Hicks scored his second of the night off a deflection early in the second. It was his 25th and the scoreboard read 3-0 in favor of Dayton. The floodgates began to open when Mark Rivera notched his 28th on a shot over the left shoulder of Steel City goaltender James Robbins.

Moments later, the Demonz tallied their fifth goal of the night, this one by Clinton Atkinson. Dayton had a comfy five goal cushion with 10 minutes yet to play in the period. The Warriors finally scored on Forward Timothy James' first of the year, making it 5-1. However, Rivera got it back as he netted his second of the game on a beautiful setup by Robert Dongara late in the period. The Demonz went to intermission with a comfortable 6-1 lead.

Mahfouz continued to fill the stat sheet with his second of the evening, on another assist from Hicks. The score coming from point blank range and increasing the lead to 7-1. Just seconds later, Michael Hansen scored his first of the year. Incredibly, Dayton scored four goals in a minute of action midway through the period. Lester Brown and Roger Tagoona each scored in the sequence as the game deteriorated into a runway, 10-1. It became 11-1 two minutes later, with Atkinson notching his second of the game.

Len Pelletier scored on the struggling Dayton power play, pushing it to 12-1.

Next Home Game: Friday, March 6th vs. Danville at Hara Arena. Game time is 7:35 p.m.

Dasher Edge Danbury in OT

By Easton Hoskins

The Danville Dashers return to action tonight against the Danbury Whalers, the last time Danville and Danbury played where Danville was the home team they played in Port Huron, Michigan as Danville won 4-1. Danville hosts Danbury tonight on their "Hockey Fights Cancer Night" while wearing their blue and white uniforms. The Dashers opened the scoring up early as Joe Pace winds up a slap shot and scores to make it 1-0. Pace's goal was assisted by John Scully.

Late into the 1st period Danbury tied the game as Dean Yakura scrambles around the net to score. Not much action took place in the first period. Neither team could keep puck control during the game to unbalance the score sheet. It seems that Danville and Danbury always have close games this year and those are the most exciting. Starting the second period Danville went on the power play and it didn't look too promising as they couldn't score but somehow Danbury found a way to score. Ilya Solarev found the back of the net with ten seconds left on Danbury's penalty kill. Late in the second period Danville's Brian Soskin threw a shot on net and it was deflected in by John Scully. As the 2nd period was winding down the teams were even at 2-2.

Danville and Danbury came out of the locker rooms ready to go. Neither teams looked tired or out of energy as you know Danville feeds off the crowd's energy. A crowd of 1,977 here at the David S. Palmer Arena, our highest of the year. So if you can imagine how loud it was just imagine the energy Danville players had to feed off of. Sometimes players from other teams even feed off the energy. But enough of that, Jonathan Juliano scored a go ahead goal off an assist from Alex Milley to make it 3-2 Danville's lead.

Late in the 3rd period Danbury's Tim Richter who was injured two times in the game, once in the 2nd and another in the 3rd. Even though Tim was hurt and not in the best form he scored a goal to knot the game at 3-3. It was a back and forth game the whole way through and it looked like it wasn't going to change either. Also I'd like to note that Kevin Hoy made an amazing save while falling on his back late in the third to keep it 3-3. Throughout the game Danville raised a bunch of money for their cancer night and couldn't have done that without the support of Danville and Danbury fans.

Three periods just wasn't enough for both teams so they went the extra mile and went into overtime. With 3:43 left in overtime Danville's John Scully scored the game winning goal off a deflection from Hoy's pads. What a game for a crowd this big, Danville's largest crowd of the year. Danville will take on Danbury tomorrow night in their last home game of the regular season. Tomorrow is also Georgetown night here at the David S. Palmer arena so there should be another big crowd and hopefully another exciting game.
