Whalers Back to Their Winning Ways; Shutout Warriors, 3-0
By: Nick Magoulas
Danbury CT- One day after Thanksgiving and the Whalers were back in action trying to start a new winning streak after they had their 8 game streak broken last Saturday by the Watertown Wolves. Thanks to a solid team effort and superb defense they did just that. Mike Brown made 29 saves for the shutout and Ilya Solarev had a goal and an assist as the Whalers defeated the Steel City Warriors Friday night 3-0.
The Whalers got the scoring started at 5:01 of the first period as Kristaps Nimanis collected his 1st goal of the season. Danbury captain David Lun carried the puck deep into the Warriors zone and had his shot stopped by Dalton McGrath. However, the rebound ended up onto the stick of Nimanis who threw it towards the goal and past the Warrior goaltender to make it 1-0. Then with 48 seconds left in the opening frame, Tim Richter would light the lamp on the power play to make it 2-0 Danbury. Richter was the beneficiary of a pretty feed across the slot from Ilya Solarev and the Co-Rookie of the year from a year ago tapped it home past McGrath for his 5th goal of the season. The Whalers out shot the Warriors 20-8 after twenty minutes of play
Neither team was able to score in the second period, but both had quality scoring chances including two separate 5 on 3 opportunities for Steel City. If it weren't for the goaltending of Steel City net minder Dalton McGrath the Danbury lead would have been a lot worse heading into the second intermission. The highlight of the frame was an intense fight between Danbury's Luke Warner and Steel City's Jake Lobato. Both men landed several big punches and ignited a fire into both the home crowd and the two teams. After two periods of play the Whalers out shot the Warriors 33-16.
In the third period it was Ilya Solarev putting the icing on the cake for Danbury as he collected his 9th goal of the season to make it 3-0 Whalers. Ian Delong made a nice play in the neutral zone which allowed Solarev to break in all alone on McGrath and he beat him through the five whole to complete the scoring for the game. The Warriors had yet another 5 on 3 power play opportunity with 3:37 remaining, but Mike Brown and the Whalers penalty kill shut the door and preserved the shutout for the home team. Warriors goalie Dalton McGrath made 39 saves in the defeat for Steel City.
Game Notes: Steel City finished 0-8 with the man advantage while Danbury was 1-3...The Warriors out shot Danbury 13-8 in the third period...The Whalers are back in action Saturday night as they visit the first place Watertown Wolves.. Steel City visits Berkshire.

Dashers Late Rally Falls Short, Lose to Demonz, 3-2
Easton Hoskins
The Danville Dashers went to battle with the Dayton Demonz Friday night at the David S. Palmer Arena in Danville. Through the first ten minutes of the game it was a goalie battle; however that was ended by a Rob Vanwyhnsberghe power play goal. Four minutes later in the first, recent addition for the Demonz, Cody Milligan scored an unassisted goal to put Dayton up 2-0. The Demonz outshot the Dashers 12 to 11 in the first and took a 2 goal lead into the locker room.
The second period was an uneventful one. The Demonz took their 2-0 lead into the locker room after the second as well. However, the Dashers did kill off two penalties, the first being a Wehebe Darge hooking penalty, and then a Joe Pace interference penalty. The Demonz had a few chances on the power play, but Matt Anthony held them dry, even losing his mask on a save he made. Both had 10 shots in the second period.
After an uneventful second period, the third period exploded with action. It all started with a goal from Justin Brausen, with an assist from Wehebe Darge that electrified the David S. Palmer Arena. However, just three minutes later the Brett Wall of Dayton scored an unassisted goal to put the Demonz back up 3-1. As we jump forward to under a minute, with an empty net, the Dashers Justin Brausen scored his second goal of the contest and made it a 3-2 game in favor of Dayton. But, that score of 3-2 held up and the Demonz escaped with a victory. The Demonz outshot the Dashers 33-31 for the game. These same teams are in action again tomorrow night from the David S. Palmer Arena. Puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
