Whalers Defeat Tired Dashers 6-1

The Danbury Whalers and Danville Dashers came into tonight's game with the goal of establishing a new winning streak after both teams lost their last game. The opening faceoff for the game between the Danbury Whalers and Danville Dashers was delayed by approximately three hours after transportation troubles saw the Dashers' bus break down more than once. They were also afflicted with an abbreviated warm up, but both teams started the game rather sloppily. Coming into the game, the Whalers featured the worst power play in the Federal Hockey League, converting on 19.2% of chances. Meanwhile, the Dashers had the worst penalty kill in the league, stopping only 74.8% of power plays. The Whalers were able to connect first, courtesy of a Cody Ayers' power play goal 8 minutes into the game, assisted by Tim Richter and Andy Willock. Former Whaler Anthony Iaquinto knotted things up at 1 when he finished a two on one with Jonathan Juliano that flew past the reach of a diving Mike Brown. Rob Dongara scored three minutes after to break the tie, with the assist to Matt Crowley. For Crowley, it was his fourth point of the season, all against Danville. Then, back on the power play, Rob Dongara won a critical offensive zone faceoff with 13.1 seconds remaining in the period. From the point, Harry Radovich sent the puck towards a crowded crease, and recent addition Garrett Peters found himself with the puck on his stick and nothing between himself and the empty cage. The power play goal, his first of the season, gave the Whalers a two goal advantage at the end of the first period.
The Whalers continued the onslaught on the power play six minutes into the period with a Ryan Patsch goal, his 21st of the season, assisted by Tim Richter and Andy Willock. Harry Radovich capitalized on an odd man rush for another power play goal just over three minutes later, assisted this time by Cody Ayers and Ryan Patsch. James Robbins came into the game in relief of Josslin St. Pierre after the starter St. Pierre skated to bench after the goal. For St. Pierre, he finished with 30 saves on 35 shots in 29:14 of action. There was a scary moment for the Whalers roughly a minute after the Radovich goal when Rob Dongara was elbowed in the head by Chris Affinati. Julian Fraser answered the bell for his injured teammate, and while the fight was a draw, Dongara was lost for the rest of the game. Fraser himself would increase the Whalers lead to 5 by poking home a loose puck in the crease for his 6th goal of the season, assisted by Todd Chinova and CJ DelVaglio. For the recently signed Chinova, this was his first point as a Danbury Whaler since December 14th, 2011 in a game versus the Cape Cod Bluefins, the team he was traded to less than a week later.
A quiet third period had no goals from either team, and was highlighted by another fight between Julian Fraser and Chris Affinati to settle the score from the second period. From a faceoff in the Whalers end, both players dropped their gloves and helmet to skate towards center ice. After both players clinched in tight, Fraser was able to use his bigger frame to land short uppercuts to Affiniati. Neither player was able to land any heavy punches, and both were assessed five for fighting and a game misconduct for fighting with less than five minutes to go in the game. The four power play goals proved to be the difference in the game as the Whalers skated away with the 6-1 victory. Mike Brown was named third star of the game with 55 saves, while Harry Radovich received second star honors with a goal and assist. The injured Rob Dongara was named the first star of the game with the game winning goal, though this was overshadowed by the concern for his health. With the delayed start to the game, the final buzzer sounded at 1:11AM. Both teams will be back in action later in the day on Sunday, with faceoffs scheduled for 5:05PM. The Whalers will host the Dayton Demonz in a battle for first place, as both teams are tied with 88 points.
