Vanderhoek Leads Danbury over Pennsylvania
Danbury CT - In the last meeting of the season between the Danbury Whalers and Pennsylvania Blues was an exciting offensive display. Tyler Scott, the young man from Ridgefield Connecticut, started in his 3rd game against the Whalers. Despite letting in 8 goals, Scott played well, making 58 saves on the 66 Whalers shots. On the other end Peter Vetri got his 1st start since last season's play-offs, and he made 30 saves in his 1st win of the season.
The game started slowly, but the Whalers caught fire after former teammate Greg Holt was called for hooking 2 minutes into the game. A minute later Matt Caranci hammered a rebound past Scott for a powerplay marker from Richard Vanderhoek and Ed Campbell after the captain ripped a hard shot from the point. 5 minutes later the home team would strike again as Vanderhoek would fire a wrist shot past Scott for a 2-0 Danbury advantage. The Blues would respond over a minute later when Greg Holt scored, cutting the lead in half. Travis Bonika would score 3 minutes later to tie the game at 2, only halfway through the 1st period. The Whalers would strike back in the rapid opening tilt as Vanderhoek would score his 2nd of the period, assisted by Alec Kirschner and Chris Atkinson. Chris would score his own goal 3 minutes later, 4-2 going into the 2nd.
Pennsylvania would increase their pressure and finally scored when Bill West scored at 9:25 of the 2nd followed up by Todd Chinova scoring on the powerplay to tie the game up for the 2nd time at 12:11 of the middle period. The Blues kept up their pressure but the Whalers had the final say when Mike Atkinson scored his record-breaking 34th goal, the most by a Whaler in a single season, when he tapped home the puck after Tyler Noseworthy fooled the defense with a pass.
Danbury would come out dominant in the 3rd and close the game out. Chris Atkinson would score 2:50 into the final period, assisted by Kamil Vavra and Richard Vanderhoek. That threesome would get another at 10:50 of the 3rd when Vavra tapped home an Atkinson shot, 7-4 Whalers. The game would be put away when 6 minutes later Tyler Noseworthy would rifle home a goal assisted by Julian Fraser and Cody Ayers.
The Whalers were 2 for 2 on the powerplay, both penalties called on Greg Holt, the former Whaler. They were 1-2 on the penalty kill. The Whalers will travel up to 1000 Islands to play their upcoming playoff rival. The next home game is Friday February 22nd against 1000 Islands, for tickets and more information visit www.thedanburywhalers.com or call 973-713-7547.
Dayton Demonz Lose 3rd Straight Game, First in Regulation at HARA
(Dayton, Ohio) A road weary Dayton Demonz team hoped to rebound today after a rough road trip from the east coast this past week. Dayton lost two consecutive games this past week at 1000 Islands, New York, and Danbury, Connecticut. Before their their loss at 1000 Islands on Thursday night, the Demonz had gone 12 games without a loss.
Returning home to the friendly confines of Hara Arena with the Demonz sporting a 20-0-1-0 should have been a good time to get back to winning ways. The Danville Dashers had other plans, winning for the first time on Hara ice 7 - 5, handing the Demonz their first regulation loss at home, and extending the Demonz losing streak to 3 games.
The first period ended with the Demonz having a 2-1 advantage over the Dashers, in a sloppy played period.
Dayton took a 1-0 lead at 7:23 on a goal by Timothy Recio. Recio shot from the left point, would go wide of the net, however it would bounce off the end boards, into the Dashers crease, going off of Dashers goalie Justin Sand and into the net.
Just over a minute later Danville would tie the game at 1-1. Jonathan Juliano, was left alone in the low slot, and was able to put a back-hander past Demon goalie Aaron Barton at 8:47.
With 15 seconds left in the period, Dayton's Trevor Karasiewicz's was stopped on a breakaway. However, through hard work, a nice pass from Peter Cintala, found the FHL's leading scorer in the slot, where his shot deflected off a Dashers skate and into Danville's net putting the Demonz up by 1.
The 2nd period saw the game break wide open; with 7 goals scored between both teams, and the Dashers taking a 6-4 lead.
Danville would tie the game at 2-2 early in the period on a goal by Dustin Skinner. Lucas Schott would give Dayton the last lead of the period 3-2 with a power-play goal. Danville's David Lun's goal would tie the game at 3-3.
The Dashers would never look back in the period scoring the next 3 goals to the Demonz 1 in the period. Dashers goal scorers were Jonathan Juliano (2nd of the game), Lee McClure's (power-play goal), Lun's 2nd of the period. Jason Hill would add a tally for the Demonz.
The final frame saw the Demonz creating many scoring opportunities. Dayton would cut the Danville lead to 6-5 mid-way through the period on Chris Leveille's goal. Danville would retake a two goal lead, 7-5 with a 2 man advantage, with Kevin McCready' power-play goal, with 3 minutes left in the period.
Dayton would pull it's goalie for a 6-5 man advantage with 1:30 left in the game. The Demonz were able to put pressure in the Danville zone, but were not able to finish on their opportunities.
Danville's Ryan Stern finished the game with 6 assists.
