FHL's Team to Beat: Outlaws
Wayne,NJ- The New Jersey Outlaws defeated the 1000 Island Privateers by the score of 5-1 today at the Ice Vault in Wayne,NJ. The matchup was a matchup of the leagues best two teams and New Jersey proved that right now they are definitely the best team in the league. They came into the game with a six point lead over 1000 Islands for number one in the Federal Hockey League and now have a nine point advantage over them with the win.
New Jersey took a 1-0 lead in the first and that is how the first period ended. They had a 3-1 lead after two periods and then they capped it off by scoring two goals in the third period to win the game 5-1. The goals were scored by Matt Miller who was assisted by Travis Kauffeldt and Luke Flicek, Anthony Battaglia twice, one was a shorthanded goal. He was assisted by William McCreary, John Goffredo, Matt Miller and Flicek. 1000 Islands goal was scored by Jeff Winchester at the 9:31 mark of the second period. In the third Flicek scored at the 10:23 mark assisted by Dan Mercer and Gentry Zollars and Kevin Cooper capped it off with 11 seconds to go as he was assisted by Kauffeldt.
The shots were 44-34 in favor of the Outlaws. 1000 Islands was 0-4 on the power play and New Jersey was 0-3 on the power play. There were a couple of roughing penalties but no fighting and no major penalties. The game was two hours and six minutes long and was witnessed by 906 people who were in attendance. Dan McWhinney got the win in goal for the Outlaws. The three stars of the game were McWhinney as the third star, Battaglia as the second star and Flicek as the third star.
The Outlaws will travel to Danville to take on the Danville Dashers on January 6th and 7th before heading to Brooklyn to take on the Aviators. They won't play another home game until January 14th against the Brooklyn Aviators.
Owsiak Nets Hat-trick, Felten with Four Helpers in Win
BROOKLYN, New York - The Brooklyn Aviators defeated the Cape Cod Bluefins 7-3 on Saturday night at the Aviator Sports and Events Center in Federal Hockey League action.
Aviators' rookie forward Andrew Owsiak had a hat trick on the night, while Jesse Felten chipped in with four helpers in Brooklyn's third straight victory over Cape Cod.
Brooklyn erupted with six goals in the opening frame to take a 6-1 lead over the Bluefins after the first twenty minutes of play. Rookie forward Matt Atsoff kicked things off with his eighth goal of the season just 2:57 into the period. Lucas Schott doubled the A's lead 2-0 on his second in a Brooklyn uniform, before Cape Cod forward Todd Chinova cut into the lead with 12:49 left on his third tally of the year. The Aviators answered with four straight after the Chinova marker, with three coming from Owsiak and the other from Atsoff.
Only one goal was scored in the second period, and it came off the stick of Aviators forward Anthony Iaquinto with 4:35 left in the frame. Defenseman Henry Coxe let a shot go from the right point, which was then redirected by Iaquinto in the slot to give the A's a 7-1 lead.
Cape Cod answered with two goals in the third period, however it was not enough as Brooklyn cruised to a 7-3 victory over the Bluefins.
Jeff Rose picked up his first win in an Aviators uniform stopping 27 shots, while Bluefins netminder Chris Testa turned aside 24 in a relief effort.
The Brooklyn Aviators will enter the year 2012 with a two game road swing up in Alexandria Bay, NY where they will take on the 1000 Islands Privateers next week on Friday, Jan. 6 th and Saturday, Jan. 7 th . Both game times are scheduled for 7:05 PM.
