FC Tampa Bay Rowdies announce the signing of Japanese international utility player Takuya Yamada. Most recently, Yamada played at Sagan Tosu in the Japan Professional Football League (J. League) during the 2009 season where he had 45 appearances and one goal.
Yamada began his professional soccer career in the J. League with Tokyo Verdy (formerly Verdy Kawasaki) in 1997. During eight years at Tokyo Verdy, Yamada made 296 appearances scoring 28 goals and served as team captain for three years.
"We are ecstatic to secure Takuya Yamada for our inaugural team," said Andrew Nestor, team owner and president. "Takuya is an icon in the game and he will bring depth, leadership and passion to our team."
Yamada is an iconic J. League player who has four caps with the Japanese National Team, including the 2004 Asian Cup in Beijing, where Japan defeated China 3-1. Yamada is known for his leadership and physical, hard-nosed style of play.
"I am happy that I am playing in the United States and with FC Tampa Bay who truly loves the sport and respects its athletes," said Yamada.
Yamada is the fourth international player signed to the 2010 roster by FC Tampa Bay, who will play their first match in April. Teams in the NASL are allowed to sign seven foreign players.
