TAMPA, Fla. (August 5, 2011) - FC Tampa Bay forward Aaron King has been named the North American Soccer League Player of the Month, the league announced on Friday.
King scored a goal in all five league matches in July for FC Tampa Bay, which claimed three wins, one tie and just one loss during the month. FC Tampa Bay added a 1-0 win over the English Premier League Bolton Wanderers in an international friendly on July 14.
"It is a great honor and certainly a reflection of how hard we have been working as a team," said King. "In the month of July we really tightened up in a lot of areas and were able to get results."
For the season, King ranks second on the team and tied for fifth in the NASL with six goals, including a current streak of goals in five consecutive games. He has played in 17 matches with seven starts in 2011 and his 14 points are second-best on the club.
The award marks the first Player of the Month honor for an FC Tampa Bay player this season, but the team has already totaled five weekly NASL honors in 2011.
Twenty media members from NASL markets cast ballots for Player of the Month, with a first-place vote worth two points and a second-place vote worth one. King received a total of 30 points. Atlanta midfielder Ciaran O'Brien finished second with 16 points, while FC Tampa Bay teammate Pascal Millien finished third with nine points. Atlanta forward Matt Horth and Montreal forward Eduardo Sebrango finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
