FC Montreal News Release
MONTREAL - FC Montreal won 2-0 over the Université de Montréal Carabins on Sunday night, at Complexe sportif Marie-Victorin, in a preparation game for the 2016 USL season.
In the 11th minute, a Carabins player fouled midfielder Heikel Jarras in the box. Jérémy Gagnon-Laparé shot the penalty that followed in the bottom left corner to give a lead to the USL team.
Later, Michael Salazar found himself alone in the box with the ball after a pass from Mastanabal Kacher. His low shot on the right found the back of the net in the 29th minute.
In the 60th minute, defender Nevello Yoseke shot from outside of the box, but the ball hit the crossbar. Right after, the Carabins also hit the post on a powerful shot.
"We had a really good first half," said head coach Philippe Eullaffroy. "It was the best first half since the beginning of the preparation. We also faced a really good goalkeeper. The second half was more average. We lacked efficiency in front of the net."
Three players from the first team, Michael Salazar, Kyle Fisher and Jérémy Gagnon-Laparé, got playing time in this game.
The USL team finished its preparation against Quebec university teams with a record of four wins and one loss.
"It ends our series against university teams on a positive note. Those are always interesting games to play in the winter," added Eullaffroy. "Now, we focus on the last three preparation games we have until the opening game of the season. I think our increasingly better control of the game gives fewer chances to our opponents, as evidenced by our last games with no goals allowed."
FC Montreal will play its next preseason game against Southern New Hampshire University this Wednesday at 1pm, at the Olympic Stadium.
