August 31, 2016 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
FC Edmonton News Release
FC Edmonton's Shawn Nicklaw earned a nomination to NASL Team of the Week for Week 9 following yet another clean sheet performance from his team. Nicklaw along with the Eddies defence made it an easy afternoon for goalkeeper Matt VanOekel, who faced just one shot all afternoon.
Below is the list of all the top performers from Week 9:
GK: Daniel Vega (Miami FC) - The veteran shot-stopper helped Miami pick up two draws in Week 9. He kept a clean sheet in a Wednesday night game against Ottawa Fury FC and made five saves against Minnesota United, only being beaten by a stellar goal from Lance Laing.
DEF: Rudy Dawson (Puerto Rico FC) - He was a key reason why Puerto Rico FC earned a draw against FC Edmonton which ended the Eddies' home winning streak. Dawson made six clearances, while also winning five duels and two tackles in the scoreless affair.
DEF: Rafael Alves (Ottawa Fury FC) - The center back helped slow down a surging Miami FC side on Wednesday night in a 0-0 draw, making six clearances and winning eight duels. He followed that up with another strong performance in another draw for Ottawa - this time 1-1 against Indy Eleven. He made six interceptions with three clearances and won eight duels last Sunday.
DEF: Shawn Nicklaw (FC Edmonton) - The Guam international was strong on the Eddies' back line in the draw with Puerto Rico on Sunday. He won six duels and four tackles in the contest.
MID: Brad Ring (Indy Eleven) - After Indy fell behind, Brad Ring was able to level the score when his half volley found the top corner in the 1-1 draw with Fury FC. The midfielder had a strong game overall, completing 37 of his 42 pass attempts and making eight interceptions.
MID: Andrés Flores (New York Cosmos) - The Salvadoran international helped fuel the Cosmos' 6-1 win over the Carolina RailHawks on Saturday which vaulted the team to first place in the Fall Season Standings. Flores had three assists and added a goal of his own in the victory. He was also named Player of the Week for his performance.
MID: Juan Arango (New York Cosmos) - New York fell behind early against Carolina and it was the Venezuelan star that helped the Cosmos roar back. He scored two minutes after the RailHawks' opener and then scored the first goal in the second half en route to the big win.
MID: Joe Cole (Tampa Bay Rowdies) - The English star moved into the team lead in goals with seven after scoring twice in the Rowdies' 2-0 win over Rayo OKC.
MID: Lance Laing (Minnesota United) - The Jamaican international scored his first goal for the Loons when he connected with the ball after a deflection off a Miami defender's head and lofted the ball over goalkeeper Daniel Vega and into the back of the net. The goal was the equalizer in a draw with Miami.
FWD: Georgi Hristov (Tampa Bay Rowdies) - He played a key role in Tampa Bay snapping its three-game losing streak. Hristov picked up the assist on Joe Cole's opening goal and it was his shot that led to the rebound for Cole to fire his second goal into an empty net.
FWD: Jairo Arrieta (New York Cosmos) - The Costa Rican international scored twice in the Cosmos' win, including a chipped effort from distance that beat RailHawks 'keeper Akira Fitzgerald. He also added an assist in the victory.
