EDMONTON, AB. - FC Edmonton has signed a loan agreement that will see promising midfielder Matt Lam join Japanese second division club side JEF United for at least the rest of the year.

Lam will be reunited with former FC Edmonton Head Coach Dwight Lodeweges, Assistant Coach Hans Schrijver and teammate Sander van Gessel who all made the move to Japan during the off-season.

"Being that the club is a close group, it was hard to say goodbye to everyone," said the 21-year-old Edmonton soccer player. "Although I liked playing at home, I see this as an opportunity to carry my career to the next level."

Lam signed with FC Edmonton in 2010 and played through an exhibition season in preparation for the club's inaugural season in the North American Soccer League (NASL) and the Nutrilite Canadian Championships beginning in April.

"For me, one of the biggest factors for my development this past year was the quality of the coaching here at FC Edmonton," Lam said, shortly before catching his flight. "The environment here was really professional and everyone put in 100 per cent."

"When we first started in professional soccer, we decided that by having a high level of coaching and a very professional team atmosphere, we'd give our players the best opportunity to succeed," said FC Edmonton owner Tom Fath. "We're really sorry to see Matt go, he's a great player but it's so important for us to help players achieve their dreams."
