FC Edmonton News Release
Two months into their 2016-17 season calendar, FC Edmonton's Regional EXCEL (REX) program is out west to face Whitecaps Girls Elite for a pair of exhibition matches.
ABOUT FC EDMONTON'S REX PROGRAM
A combined 23 players from both the Edmonton and Calgary REX programs, along with two coaches made the trip to Vancouver. Players and coaches train, compete and stay at Fortius Sport & Health Centre, the same facility used by the Canadian Women's national program. After playing in their first match Wednesday, the group will wrap up competition on Friday at Simon Fraser University.
The girls program has headed out west several times over the past two years to face the 'Caps, with the mild climate allowing players to participate in proper 11v11, outdoor competition.
"I think the biggest challenge we have had so far this season has been getting actual games," REX technical director Sergio Teixeira explained. "That really bad weather that we had a couple weeks ago forced us to miss back-to-back weekends of competition, so this weekend's trip comes at a perfect time. It's just really good competition, the games are absolutely fantastic."
The revamped girl's program has been going virtually non-stop since kicking off in September under the Canadian Soccer Association's (CSA) EXCEL curriculum. Players train four times per-week at Victoria Soccer Centre and participate in weight training twice-per-week at the University of Alberta's Saville Centre, while also competing in weekend exhibition matches.
"The feedback on the training so far has been fantastic," Teixeira added. "The curriculum that the CSA has provided us is excellent. It has a great balance across the tactical, technical and emotional components of the game."
This week's trip is the first of several planned for the upcoming year in the FC Edmonton REX program.
"We will have a break for Christmas and then coming up pretty quickly is the Spring break trip to England," Teixeira concluded. "That will be fantastic. Our girls we will be playing some of the top English clubs over there."
FC Edmonton's REX Program aims to prepare and develop players to move onwards to the national and collegiate levels of women's soccer. Funded by FC Edmonton owners Tom and Dave Fath, the women's REX program also draws support from the Alberta Soccer Association.
