FC Edmonton News Release
EDMONTON, AB (October 18, 2014) - For more than just bragging rights, FC Edmonton (7W-5D-4L) travelled to the nation's capital to play Ottawa Fury FC (4W-4D-8L) for the last time in the 2014 North American Soccer League (NASL) season. After a hard fought 90 minutes, the visiting Eddies came away with all three points in a 2-0 victory.
The Eddies wasted no time getting on the board for a 1-0 lead. In the 10th minute midfielder Lance Laing raced down the far side of the field and sent a low cross into the box. Chad Burt got on the end of the cross and redirected it passed Ottawa goalkeeper Romuald Peiser for an early lead.
With mounting pressure, FC Edmonton doubled their lead in the 21st minute when Laing took a corner kick and it curled into the net at the near post. After an early lead, the Eddies sat back and defended waves of Ottawa attack.
Laing's goal in the 21st minute takes the midfielder into the lead for FC Edmonton's leading goalscorer title with seven goals in the season. His assist was the sixth of the year.
"We looked really dangerous moving forward," said FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller at half time. "But it might be our poorest half in possession, we are giving it away far too easy. We just need a little bit more discipline."
After the restart, Ottawa looked to find their way back into the match. With over 60 per cent of possession in the second half in favour of Ottawa, the Eddies were forced to defend to maintain their two goal lead.
Striker Pierre-Rudolph Mayard had the best Fury chance of the half in the 87th minute with a shot that just rolled wide of the far post.
After five minutes of added time at the end of the match, FC Edmonton were able to hang on to their lead and grab all three points.
With this latest victory, the Eddies extended their undefeated streak to six matches and now sit one point back of a fourth place finish in the NASL combined standings - although Fort Lauderdale Strikers and Carolina RailHawks play at 5:30 p.m. MT. Should the Eddies get a favourable result out of this match, they will be two points behind a post-season finish with two fixtures left to play.
FC Edmonton's next match will be on October 25 (5:30 p.m. MT KO) against Fort Lauderdale Strikers down in Florida.
