FC Edmonton Look to End Winless Streak
August 19, 2011 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
FC Edmonton News Release
EDMONTON, AB. - The Atlanta Silverbacks make the long trek north for the first time this season to take on FC Edmonton at Foote Field on Sunday (Kick Off @ 7:30 p.m./www.fcedmonton.com/Team 1260).
FC Edmonton has struggled as of late. The team is currently on an eight-game winless streak but broke a five-game losing streak last Sunday, tying the Fort Lauderdale Strikers 1-1 at Foote Field.
Atlanta has struggled all season and sits in the basement of the NASL with just 12 points in 21 games. FC Edmonton beat Atlanta both times in Georgia, shutting the Silverbacks out in both competitions, 1-0 on April 16 and 2-0 on May 7.
With only seven games left in the NASL regular season, the home side is hoping for more of the same success as they play Atlanta twice in just over two weeks.
FC Edmonton currently holds down the sixth and final playoff spot with 26 points in 21 games but is just three points back of fourth place and a home playoff game. The NSC Minnesota Stars are in fourth right now with 29 points from 21 games. The two teams face each other at Foote Field on Sept. 3.
OTHER FACTS:
- Shaun Saiko has served his one-game suspension for accumulating five yellow cards, while Chris Lemire will miss the game for the same infraction.
- Goalkeepers Lance Parker and Jaswinder Gill and defender Paul Matthijs are still out due to injuries.
- FC Edmonton's reserve team beat Edmonton Scottish 4-0 on Tuesday night. Defender Alex Surprenant scored two goals while 'keeper David Monsalve posted the shutout.
