FC Edmonton Earns First Point of NASL Season
April 12, 2015 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
FC Edmonton News Release
EDMONTON, AB - FC Edmonton braved through visiting North American Soccer League (NASL) Carolina RailHawk's early dominance to earn their first point in a 1-1 draw during the Canadian Tire Home Opener at Clarke Field in front of 2,492 fans.
Nacho Novo scored for the visiting RailHawks 41 minutes in, while 2014 FC Edmonton leading scorer Lance Laing scored to level the game at one goal apiece just before the half-time whistle.
Only seconds after the match kicked off, Eddies 'keeper Matt VanOekel saved a one-on one-shot from RailHawks striker Novo. Within the first 10 minutes of the match, VanOekel made three more excellent saves to maintain the game at 0-0 and keep FC Edmonton in the game.
The RailHawks finally converted 41 minutes in after Novo volleyed in a cross from left-winger Leo Osaki to put his side up 1-0.
Nearing the end of stoppage time, the Eddies' Sainey Nyassi quickly found Laing inside the box, who, with a composed finish with his right foot, levelled the score at 1-1 going into halftime.
The Eddies carried their late first half momentum into the opening of the second half, with an early Nyassi shot on target to open the final 45 minutes of play. Nyassi's opportunity was followed by a long stretches of possession for the home side, with multiple opportunities for the Eddies that ultimately failed to convert.
Edmonton's Ãskar Hauksson came on for Laing 72 minutes in and quickly asserted himself in the game by linking up with the rest of the midfield to keep possession of the ball.
Despite a home team surge in the second half, FC Edmonton and the Carolina RailHawks finished off the Canadian Tire Home in a 1-1 draw.
"It's early in the season," concluded FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller. "This is the first point of the season, so that's a positive. But Carolina will look at this as two points dropped given the chances that we gave them."
The Eddies are at home again next Sunday, April 19 against Fort Lauderdale Strikers at Clarke Field and kick-off is set for 2:00 p.m. MT. The game is presented by Boardwalk Rental Communities and tickets are still available. Carolina RailHawks host the Atlanta Silverbacks on April 18 at WakeMed Soccer Park. Kick-off in their match is set for 7:30 p.m. MT.
