FC Edmonton News Release
Edmonton, AB - It was a beautiful night for FC Edmonton's NASL Home Opener at Foote Field last night.
The fans came out in droves, 2,651 to be exact, and they saw the home team come out slowly.
Montreal's dangerous striker, Ali Gerba, got his foot on a loose ball in the six-yard box after FC Edmonton defenders failed to clear it and slid it under Rein Baart in the 9th minute.
Montreal's Antonio Ribeiro was shown a yellow just three minutes later and that's when FC Edmonton started to find its legs.
Unfortunately for Edmonton fans, Montreal didn't let up. Shaun Saiko was shown a controversial yellow in the 31st and the resulting free kick was deflected by Anthony Legall and past Baart for the Impact's second.
The Impact didn't stop there. Four minutes later Gerba hit a shot that eluded Baart and it was 3-0 before the half.
FC Edmonton made one change at halftime bringing Antonio Rago on for André Duberry at the back. Montreal made a change of their own in the 65thbringing Pierre Rudolph Mayard on for Gerba up front and then Simon Gatti followed to replace Antonio Ribeiro in the midfield.
FC Edmonton`s Shaun Saiko was replaced by striker Kyle Porter in search of a goal.
The only thing they found however was a yellow card to Montreal`s Legall in the 74th and the Impact made one more change minutes later bringing Idriss Ech Chergui on for Leonardo Di Lorenzo.
In the 79th minute, FC Edmonton made one more sub hoping for a home goal. Paul Craig made his first appearance of the season replacing Sam Lam up front.
But five minutes later it all went bad for FC Edmonton. What looked like a routine play by Baart to catch the ball resulted in a straight red when he took out the Impact striker in the process.
Lemire got his own straight red in the process by arguing the call with the ref.
Kyle Yamada took over in net, Nevio Pizzolitto scored from the spot to make it 4-0 and Ech Chergui iced it in the 90th making the final 5-0.
